AU WiMax

Postby zero_oki » Fri Jan 20, 2012 12:50 pm

Moving back to Japan in Tokyo for two weeks. Previously in Okinawa I had DoCoMo and a feature phone, but this time looking to pick up a Galaxy S2 with WiMax. Any particular good or bad experiences with their service?

Rocking it at home for internet right now. Solid 10mb/s connection with pretty decent coverage. (UQ WiMAX is what I'm using though....no contract and reasonable priced!)

well that all depends on where you are, although admittedly Tokyo is looked after (as it is in all things)

I can't speak for the WiMAX service as I'm about to finish up with Softbank, but the au Galaxy S II WiMAX model is one unit I've got my eye on.
Since I will be doing the MNP thing (mobile number portability), it looks like I could get my hands on one for 6,930 yen (subsidized price), according to this store in Yokohama.
Hopefully that price is the same in all au stores.

Thanks for the input! I planned on picking up a U-Road Home WiMax access point as well, I feel better assured that some have had a good experience. All I hear about is bad news for Sprint's implementation in the US as horrible.

I think, that like for Highspeed rail... the US is not really a reference on how to do it right...

I think the problem is coverage...just like Docomo's Xi is still in it's infancy here. WiMax has been here for a few years now and has pretty good coverage. In the U.S., it was adopted too late (already going to be replaced with other 4G tech) and with a country the size of the US, coverage is a bigger issue there.

Speaking of Highspeed rail in the U.S....

(though last I read it was going to be yet another bid lost by Japan and built by Hyundai)

I hope California's project is successful. We need alternatives to cars and airplanes in America. It'd be nice to travel the country without going through long lines and the Titty\Testicle Squeezing Authority.

Unfortunate possibility...

Looks like the first leg is already scheduled to have track layed. I wonder if they will make an LA-LV track as well. Seems even easier to do in terms of land rights and would make a nice alternative to flying/driving out there. As much as I'd like to say the skeptics from CA should come visit Japan to see bullet trains in action....if they saw the costs here, they might become more skeptical

The BART Police are going to have a fucked time doing that... So many people with guns, knifes, and dope...

BART was the easiest way for people to transport shit cause the cops don't dont want to risk their life fucking with some dope head and 20 of his boys spreaded out on several cars of the train.

I have seen a few things that never went on the news and seen police literally turn around when stuff happened...

Don't thin that airport level security can be reasonably be implemented on the BART system...would make it the slowest way to travel ever
