Hello,

I am old friend of Marc's - Last saw him in September last year when I visited Japan and have been trying to get in touch with him for some months. Can you confirm that he has actually passed away, and do you have any information at all about what happened to him? He was a pretty food friend and I only stumbled upon this post after doing a Google search in hope of finding an alternative way to contact him, so any information you can provide would be very much appreciated.

I'm sorry, the only confirmation I could find online was a notice posted by the South African Chamber of Commerce in Japan on their Facebook page.

People I know have looked at his vlogs on youtube and have said they're kinda fucking annoying. Something about the overdone 'Look at what I discovered in Japan!'. Sad and all about his early death but that aint mean people can't criticise stuff he put out publicly. Still no fan of his vids on youtube. Then again I'm not inta the wow we're young Americans and we've discovered the world and let's congratulate ourselves and indulge ourselves in public. Two foreigners were hit by a light truck at a pedestrian crossing in Iidamachi, near Narita City, at 2:30am this morning. One, a woman, died at the scene while the man she was with is seriously hurt. You might wish to read the original articles on his (Matt Johnson's) disappearance. Not even "between the lines" is there anything to suggest that it might be suicide. Much more likely that he made a poor decision by grossly under-estimating the conditions on the mountain -especially in the middle of winter(!)

If he did tell any of his co-workers of his plans to climb Mt. Fuji, I also wonder what the Hell they were thinking? "uh, okay... have a good time!"

It's pretty easy to die out there from hypothermia. This guy, David Austin (29) thought that by taking a few outdoor survival courses, he could "live off the land" for a full year up in Scotland's Highlands. Ironically, his hero, Bear Grylls. when he does his reality TV shows - often stays in comfortable hotels in between numerous filming breaks. Not only did Austin end up dying of hypothermia within a week or so, he was only a 30 minute walk away from civilization.
