Yeah, kind of like Mt. Washington in the northeastern US. At less than 2000m, most experienced climbers don't even consider it a mountain, but its isolated position right between the Gulf Stream and the Canadian north make the weather dangerously unpredictable. Winter temperatures average 20-below and winds of over 370kph have been recorded on the peak.

Yes I'd guess it's similar, Fuji just sticks out there isolated too. I can't even imagine how quick death would come if you got up past that tree line and the winds got bad. You would have to be VERY lucky even if you'd mountaineered your whole life.

As far as them putting together a search party of family members and such. I am speechless other than to say...

P.S. I wish I hadn't said "not a major thing" to solo it in winter. Would edit that to not unheard of.

It's common throughout the world as far as I know. And even when not required it's the safe thing to do. I've heard of guys going on long treks not only giving the police/rangers there full routes but going so far as to give them a piece of cloth with their scent and a boot print, etc.

I suppose it is a bit hardcore which is probably what struck him as funny but if you're going to be out in the wilderness for weeks or whatever it makes sense to let them have any way possible to track you if you don't show up as scheduled.

This is Matt's sister: Thank you everyone for your prayers and patience as our family goes through this time. My Dad, brother-in-law and the search party will be traveling to Tokyo this weekend. It takes over 24 hours to get there. After meeting and collaborating with the police department and rescue team, the tentative plan is to begin the search on Wednesday night (Thursday morning Tokyo time). Thanks again for your prayers.

Here's my quick and dirty summary of the report Taro posted:

A 23 year old American fell to his death from a building in Higashi Shinsaibashi in Osaka during the eraly hours of Saturday morning. No-one saw him fall but a passer-by found him lying on the pavement, with blood coming from his ears, just before 7:00am. An ambulance arrived to take him to hospital but he died about an hour and a half later. Police say all injuries on his body were consistent with a fall. He had money left in his wallet, and a gaijin card which allowed a provisional identification which police are now seeking to confirm. The building is a commercial property in Shinsaibashi with bars and restaurants on the 6th and 7th floors. An Asahi report says police have ordered an autopsy.

Take it from an expert...
If you don't want to spend "an hour and a half" in pain in the hospital before dying, always leap from more than 10 stories---more than 15 is ideal to make sure you hit at terminal velocity.

I get the feeling from a lot of news reports that they probably mean "was declared dead an hour an a half later" rather than "died". Not sure the "reporters" are aware of the distinction.

Now for those with some internashiunnal experience...

I recommand Seoul Universitiy hospital if you are aiming for a cure without suffering.

Or some hospital in the sticks that I have to search the name if you want to see UBER hot Korean female doctors arguing with UBER+ hot Korean nurses...

Me Dj00ly and I were totally mesmerized to the point of fogetting the pain (for me at least, me Dj00ly is not got at empathy anyway). I was already picturing them fighting in monokini in a mud swimming pool. While me Dj00ly was still not understanding how the nurse dared to talk back, and why the doctor didn't punch her yet. We nearly asked for popcorm...

Can't expect them to be trained to these subtelties while the only skill required seems to be able to stand out under the rain, wind or snow to report aboot approaching typhoons...

I am not buying it. I have witnessed someone fall from only 15m high on the concrete, I was the first on the scene, and I have seen what it did to his legs and head. You just don't "bleed from an ear" if you ever fall from a 6 story building. Trust me.

So either the report is far from complete -it would be ok, readers don't need to know his brain was all over the pavement like egg yolk- or the police is clueless.

You've misread the report. He wasn't only bleeding from his ears. That's just what the passer-by said when she called the emergency services. He had more serious injuries which the police said were consistent with a fall from the building.
