The quake alert party started this morning... (Yurekuru should be location aware... ridiculous to have to set it manually while the IPhone can tell if you are in your kitchen or in the loo)

ya... woke me and the wife up.

whenever there is a slight shaking my wife always runs to the door to open it... but if it was a big earthquake, running to the door can mean breaking your legs or causing some other damage that would make you unable to proceed to the next series of fucked situations...

not to mention by the door is a 2 meter sliding glass door... so if the quake was big enough she would be in a pile of broken glass...

back on topic... pissed me off cause there was no quake after the message... gets kinda fun now, seeing how big of a quake comes after the message and why there is no message for the long one like last night.

I cancelled my early warning "subscription", as it started to feel like a girlfriend saying to me on a Monday morning, "Y'know what, next weekend, we need to talk." and you got to sit around for awhile wondering what she found out, what she's PO'ed about, whether she's pregnant, etc. Just start shaking me around, drop a 5-ton steel beam on my head, and get it over with already. Disasters don't need an overture.

I suppose when it really matters (in my case the directly-below-Tokyo-M7+ the chattering classes are chattering about recently) there won't be any warning anyway.

FWIW there's a nice article in this week's AERA with a rundown of the designated evacuation areas and their likelihood of being surrounded by all sides by burning neighbourhoods. Oh yes, and something about a "Shinjuku faultline".

Seriously... I sometimes fell I'm not on the same planet as you...
The "we need to talk" situation usually involve scheduling a meeting room. two team of legal consultant catering for several days at least real time teanscript and more security guards than a bildurburg birthday party...

(but usually involve situations where there is simply no Good solution and oppose the "then can do nothing shoganai" team versus the "this solution suck more than my sister at her birthday sausagefest party but at leat it's trying to do something" team)

nikoneko wrote:As I mentioned I have learned much about this topic over the last year through a couple of strange coincidences. Long story short, it started with the quake and then I began getting outdoors for unrelated reasons and after getting lost enough times I began reading up with a passion. If nobody has any objections I'll start a thread on disaster preparedness in Japan tomorrow or the next day with some good links and such. One thing I've learned is starting to talk "survival" can go downhill real quick so that's why I am leery.. But it's a topic I've thought much about and unique info for us in English is hard to find. Would be super cool to here the other's FG input too.

ya so please do start the topic... quake day is soon to come...

Yes I did start it, it's in this forum under the topic "Disaster Preparedness FG Style". It did get a bit messy but there are some good posts about bug out bags and other things. I keep hoping to do another post about evacuation options as that's one really important part that is missing.

Tsunami warning on a Wednesday night! Luckily it didn't amount to much, but we had a good little shake about an hour ago. My students dropped to the floor and under the table faster than you could say Tepco! Magnitude 7, but only shindo 4 here in Hachinohe. The rest of the hour the kids were spooked. My wife as well!
