WHILE IN FACT... AND JUST... FOR NOW... the current release of Cesium 137 is 4 times higher than in Chernobyl... (and counting btw...)

Before you discard the source as being from ENews... they are just quoting and estimate from Tepco... Yes... I know... the Tepco people can't distinguish their head from their arses... but since this number fit my usual argumentation... I'll go openly with it... (just hoping they are not publishing it to cover for worse news to come)

Seems the number for Fukushima where calculated for Iodine equivalent (factor 40 times). so for now the score seems to be only 1/8th of Chernobyl, not that it should really cheer you up anyway:

Cesium-137 released from Fukushima: 10,000 terabecquerels
Cesium-137 released from Chernobyl: 85,000 terabecquerels

That makes a helluva lot more sense in the light of actual radiation measurements in the area. The initially high radiation levels dropped fairly quickly (Iodine). But we're still left with that durned cesium, unfortunately, which is going to stick around for a while.

Local measure depend on the wind direction... If release occurs when the wind is eastbound you won't get much local reading compared to the seaside.

Speaking of which, judging by todays wind patterns I'd expect little higher than usual air values over Tokyo... maybe a good day to rent some pr0n to watch at home...

Well, they did say that though the levels of radiation are 10X higher than usual, the tuna is still safe. We all know that the authorities would never lie about such a thing. Besides, why worry about radiation when the mercury is already killing you!

Ready to bet mah cheezeburger money that nobody will go to jail over this anyway... bad luck, because handing out death penalty to some execs for these kind of coutry/planet-wide screwups would certainly push more than one oyaji to get their shit straight... instead it will just send the message that to get away with it you need to make the screw up as biblically big as possible...

I have a question. Since the nuclear power plants went off line we have been warned about power shortages, and the need for cutbacks to avoid rolling blackouts. But what I would like to know is that everyday, month etc., more and more people are adding solar panels to their houses, have these had no effect what-so-ever? I know it might be difficult to measure, but there must be some effect, otherwise it seems to me that solar panels are a real bust. I may be way off base, but I often hear how solar is the answer, but never hear how it is really working.

Need an Alternative energy / living off grid forum maybe...

Because as of now... it's a bit of a fight to find the good ressource. Not the "as seen on TV" eco shmurtz bullshit.

The real deal...

Cogeneration, house size backup generators, solar arrays with battery banks...

Not teh Hitachi/think gaia/look at me I drive a Prius save the earth feel good crap.

Solar panels for hot water generation are very feasible right now (and you can see them all over the place here) but panels for reg. electricity aren't cheap/productive enough for every home just yet...though Coligny has the right idea, neighborhood solar panel set up and distribution center.

Anyhow, fuck TEPCO. Haven't seen any of these scary blackouts just yet and the hive mind is much more capable of squeezing itself when it comes to cutting back on electricity..

Whenever and wherever I decide to build, there are a bazillion different ways to be more efficient and reduce your dependence on the grid. (or remove your dependence on the grid) Most of it just depends on taking enough time to plan your build an do shit right rather than buy into the overpriced cookie cutter crap that most home "brands" will try to sell you. One of the more ingenious (well, more like a why don't all homes do this type of deal?) things I saw was running the drain pipe from the shower/bath along the inlet pipe to the water heater...so you're preheating the water going into the water heater with your heated waste water. Other houses I saw had a way to route this into the flooring as well. Imagine the savings each shower. You'd think this type of shit would be popular in Japan but it's probably not as profitable for the builders and they probably excuse it away with the typical "only worth doing in Hokkaido or Okinawa" type false イメージ building explanations. (or come up with some other BS cultural excuse while the rest of the world sees progress)

[SHORT VERSION] Cogeneration is a methode of producing electricity while also using the waste heat byproduced.

[Lomg version] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cogeneration

Unlike nukular powerplant where you use the heat for electricity then piss away all the thermal energy produced...

For example...using a gaz powergenerator but using the heat from the exhaust to warm the house in winter.

It's excessively commonly done for huge installation in France... supposedly forbidden inside cities for regulatory reasons... But most of these sites are governementally owned it jsut result in flipping birds and administrative warfare without too much casualties (aside from colorfully worded post it notes)...

But making it a community project sounds like a good idea too...

I'm not claiming this is anything other than a coincidence but ....

A 29-year-old friend of mine went to Tohoku to work for an NGO four about a year after the quake. She moved to Shizuoka this summer to start a new job and has been feeling pretty shitty so she went to a doctor and they found a growth on one of her ovaries. She's been told that based on that and her general condition it could very well be cancer. They won't know for sure till they do a biopsy which will be sometime in the next couple of months. Hopefully it's benign.
