Reading Eagle (1967) - Man Studies Lip-Reading to Watch Japanese Television
Ronald E. (Doc) Lewis speaks and hears normally but he is studying lip-reading so he can enjoy his spare time better. He wants to understand American shows on Japanese television. Lewis said one of the minor frustrations for the American living in Japan is U.S. television shows on Japanese television with dubbed-in Japanese dialogue. He said it is unnerving to see for the first time "I Love Lucy", "Gunsmoke", "Laramie", Rawhide and other popular - or once popular - American television programs and hear U.S. stars speaking Japanese.

So Lewis, general manager for Air America at Tachikawa Air Force Base, set out to do something about the language barrier. He decided several years ago he could beat the Japanese system if he mastered lip-reading...Now when he watches his favourite American shows...he turns off the sound and lip-reads in English. But he says it isn't easy. "They keep throwing curves at me," the former Coloradan said. "Like a couple of months ago. I'd learned how to lip-read Jess Harper and Slim Sherman in 'Laramie' real good...Then what did they do? They pulled 'Laramie' off and substituted 'Rawhide'. And the top guy in 'Rawhide' has real thin lips." He said lip-reading is not the easiest way to understand television in Japan, but he figures he is considerably ahead of the 30,000 other Americans living here....more...

Hahaha I just about launched into a long tirade about this guys surely being able to watch broadcasts with bilingual soundtracks for his 50 year old TV shows, or buy the box set DVD. I noticed that this was a 45 year old newspaper clipping just before hitting "post."
