Hmm, it says Installation time: 15min on the packet, but it takes at least that long just to read the instructions. So much for the idea of squeezing that in during a break.

...luckily the dayjob is kind of compatible with this kind of stuff, though unfortunately I'm in the middle of setting up a system where we don't know all the operational parameters until we come across them which is hampering my forum styling somewhat.

I loathe sites which open links in new windows - God gave us the middle mouse button for a reason - so that's not going to happen unless there's some kind of optional per-user setting.

Does there now exist some kind of widely-supported HTML/JS which opens links in new tabs? I'm a bit behind the times on that.

Most forums, PHPBB-driven or otherwise, opens links in new tabs/windows. It's expected behavior--Twitter and Facebook opens links in new tabs/windows by default.

Alternatively, a you could use the standard JS hover button that appears when you hover a link which allows you to open in new tab if not a per-user site setting.

Supposedly, on line # 624 in an unmodified PHPBB v3.0.5 file (2009) this feature can be activated:

$html = "$whitespace<!-- $tag --><a$class href=\"$url\">$text</a><!-- $tag -->$append";

Open Links in the Background – by default, a link opens in the same tab that you’re currently viewing. But if you go to the into the iPad Settings and select Safari on the left, you can turn on the option to “Open New Tabs in Background.” Now back in Safari, you can tap and hold a link to access the option “Open in New Tab” which will open and load the link in a new tab while leaving you on your current tab.

Hmm, that still doesn't mean I think it's a good thing (in fact IT ANNOYS THE HELL OUT OF ME), and I'm not the only one. phpBB has evidently removed that behaviour in version 3, and some obscure sites (Google, BBC come to mind) don't do it either ;)

I can see how it might be an issue for mobile browsers, but that's not a good reason to force it on everybody.

So with that in mind I've whipped the team into action and in the UCP there's now an option "Open external links in new window" (Board preferences -> Edit display options ) which if set to "yes" will have new windows popping upto your heart's content :mrgreen:

Thank you!

I know I often have too many tabs open at the same time but I am so ADD that I tend to click on links to a new tab for me to come back to read later. At any time, I can have 15 or 20 tabs open. Just more insight into my how my crazy head works. :roll:
