Barrier free-for-all

Postby Taro Toporific » Fri Aug 17, 2012 3:47 pm

Hey, I use mini-escalators like that all the time here in the Land-of-Concrete(TM). Compared to roping up with carabiners and pitons to just haul myself up those five steps on crutches, that escalator is appreciated (although the raving morons who built the split grade should be executed for gross incompetence).

Rather than mini-escalators, it's these marvels of Japanese engineering that need to be "celebrated."

I dun't get the problem with the last 2... 1 show those sidestair wheelchair lifts, the other is aboot some loo dining etiquette !? Definately too hot to brain today...

sidenote. When i risk mahself out of the bunker I often try to think which way I should take if I was going out with one of mah RC trucks (to heavy and big to carry in bags, so it's eiter moving them by car or they have to move on their own). And there is more than an occasion where it would simply not be possible... My point being... if a RC truck can't go... someone in a wheelchair can't go either...

The wheelchair lifts are NEVER even are turned on. When encountering one you have to locate the stationmaster and then wait 20-40 minutes for them to find the key and figure out how to turn in on. Phoning ahead helps, but 50% of the lifts are broken. Can you image how many station employees and how long it takes to carry 110kg gaijin up or down the stairs? They have to call the fire department.

The funniest major stations are Shin-Yokohama's Shinkansen platform (that required two fire and rescue squads and 1.5 hours) and Shibuya's Ginza Line (after waiting an hour, I crawled up the stairs on my belly like an alligator and a random 70+ year old lady pulled my empty wheelchair up for me).

Wait, they don't do systematic test runs of all those equipements at the opening time ?

Those guys are awesome... with all the choregraphy they do for all train departure nobody thought aboot actually doing something even remotely useful ?

In Nagoya I think the killer would be Sakae exchange... even when you can walk it's a nightmare, labyrinth, stair going 4 steps down under an overhead passage leaving less than 2m to the ceiling, then 4 stairs back up before more stairs... elevators... sometimes, between some levels... but ifyou want to go precisely somewhere you might have to walk up and down few plateform to reach them then your goal... In fact it's like the castle levels of supermario... in even moar boring...

On a sidenote explaining my surprise for the lack of test runs. Everymorning I drive in front of the firestation, and on the way back, every single day they do test runs of all the equipements and all their trucks on their front lawn... Really difficult to look at the road with these guys playing with their toys on the side...

The funniest one to me is the elevator at Takadanobaba that elevates you about a foot and exits on the opposite side...when all that is really needed is a ramp. I tried to find a video but was turning off at all the elevator otaku videos documenting elevators, their brand, and location...

Yoyogi JR has one of those too. It is so stooopid. There are 4 or 5 stairs and there is a mini escalator (up only) and an elevator that also goes down into the Oedo line - just one floor up from Hades.

They should have just put a ramp there and saved the cash for the stoopid one way mini escalator. Plenty of space there for a ramp. The elevator takes FOREVER for these 5 steps as every OL is waiting to use it to get down to the Oedo line to avoid the stairs.

When you have a stroller, you totally get to know the accessible routes through the stations.

BTW there used to be an Accessible Tokyo English website but it seems to have disappeared.

LOL, seems like they're all on JR   I never say anything to people using the elevators cause there are conditions that aren't obvious but the amount of handicap-free lookin' people here that get in my way when I have massive luggage or whatever is insane.

GomiGirl wrote:When you have a stroller, you totally get to know the accessible routes through the stations.

That's how I even noticed it, been using the station for years but the one time I go there with a stroller and WTF??? It's bad enough that I'd avoid taking a stroller when going out. May be killer on your back but I'd gather it's much more convenient to go out like this...

I know the one you mean, while waiting for someone once I came to the conclusion there wasn't enough space for a ramp which would conform to whatever steepness-of-ramp regulations there might be. Might be wrong though, TIJ and all that.

I think you are right. I recently looked at installing a ramp and the gradient has to be very very gentle. So much so that fitting a ramp was out of the question.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

I THINK there is plenty of room in front and behind it to make a ramp that would meet steepness standards. Even if there weren't, there is on the the other side where the stairs are. (still cheaper and better than the retarded elevator)

I'd love to say "haha retarded JR architects doh" but I live in hope that there's a sliver of a chance there's a valid reason why they didn't put a ramp in. I'll take a measure and a copy of the Disabled Ramp Gradient Regulations next time I pass through ;)

I remember seeing a photo of a kid in one of these strapped to the side of a horse that the Mum was riding. I thought it was awesome.

I used to swaddle my kid when he was little. He seemed to find it comforting.

I have tried to google the image many times but I can't find it.

Similar but not quite. There were a few other people in the photo.

But this is good enough. I think it is sensational.

That kid must be 6 or 8months old I reckon.

Went past today and to my untrained layperson's eye there is no fucking way you can squeeze in a ramp there (OK, you could physically do it but it'd have something like a 15 ~ 20% gradient). Any other way of squeezing a ramp in would involve remodelling the entire area.
