Bank just refused to honour a cheque from OS as it was missing the "Inc" from the company name. I wouldn't mind so much, but it is for a buttload of money that we have been waiting on.

I realise that cheques are not common here but but it is still legal tendor..

I don't know for Japan. But in France it is perfectly ok to leave the "to" part empty and the recipient fill it himself. Especially companies who usually put their namestamp on it instead of handwriting.

Interfering with the amount is totally illegal. But putting the precise recipient name for an agreed transaction is totally and understandably done.

there is also the double bar rule. If the check have // it can only be credited to an account but if don't have it it can be paid directly.

Twasn't I but my assistant at the bank. She said she escalated it to a manager and did the "onegai" thing but she was shut down apparently. Everybody is so nervous about cheques here as they don't see them very often.

Am really pissed off. Have asked the company who wrote the cheque if I can just enter in the "inc" part and am waiting their reply. Just to cover my butt* basically.
