October 8, 2003 - from Australian Associated Press

Port Moresby: A World War II gold cache may have been discovered on a remote mountain top in Papua New Guinea's New Ireland province.

Troops and police have been sent to the Bismark Archipelago, north-east of the mainland, to verify the claim and protect the find from poachers, the Post-Courier newspaper reported.

Government staff members were told up to 10 tonnes of gold, unearthed and processed by the Japanese during the war, had been kept in a cave. ...
