GuyJean RIP

Postby L S » Tue Nov 27, 2012 7:22 am

To the FG's who knew him, sadly GuyJean passed away last Friday from cancer at a way too early age. Since I found out today, I have have had a hard time processing the fact and wanting to do something, but what can you do. So, this is the only thing I could think of...post it and let the old FGs that knew him raise a toast to Freedom Lohr. He was a very good and bright soul. Also, please say a word in your heart for his wife and kids.

GuyJean was a great bloke. For me, the greatest testament to his character was that in the many years I knew he was seriously ill, I never once heard him complain (which played on my conscience because I have nothing more than First World problems at worst and can't stop bitching for any longer than about 35 seconds).

I am very saddened by this. In my net conversations with him, he was a gentleman of the first order even when I disagreed with him on whatever we were talking about at the time. Althought, I never personally met him, he possessed fine sense of humor and decency.

I wish had the opportunity to meet in person.

Wow, that's really sad. He was one of the best posters on here. I wondered why he'd stopped coming around. We should all toast him with a glass of urine (some of you will know what I'm talking about)

Rest in peace, dude.

Despite visiting him in hospital a while back, I can't get my head around it yet. It is just not fair to the world to lose somebody as sensational as GJ.

I cannot fathom what his wife and kids are going through now. It literally breaks my heart.

Sorry for not posting this earlier, but the mods decided not to rush to make the news public.

I'm grateful to GuyJean for a lot of things....
...about 10 years ago, he was the core of a group of mostly FuckedGaijin posters who would meet monthly at the Dubliners in Shibuya (which had then just opened) and drink copiously while scoffing down plate after plate of yummy chips dipped in tomato sauce or mayo with relish in it. Bloody marvelous stuff.
Looking back, apart from those times when I was getting laid, those sessions were among some of the moments I recall most fondly about being with gaijin in Japan.
They pretty much ended when GuyJean got steady work, then a family and everybody drifted away.
I miss GuyJean dearly...and pray that his family will be OK.

GuyJean's posts were one of the reasons for me to stick around back in the days (this and the semi NSFW thread)
I'm sorry to hear he's no more with us and hope his family and friends will find solace in the memories he left.

Postby Mulboyne » Tue Nov 27, 2012 7:01 pm

GuyJean was always a witty poster on FG and one of the reasons I thought this place was a forum worth joining all those years ago.

I was lucky enough to meet him through Captain Japan, and we had some good nights together. One New Years Eve lasted until midday on the 1st, with us toasting Mount Fuji from the bar at the top of the Park Hyatt. A few years later, we were again together at New Years Eve, and he broke the news that a routine health check had found something worrying.

At first, treatments seemed to work and he moved overseas with his family, full of confidence. He wasn't clear, though, and Captain Japan passed the word that he again needed medical care. Only a few days ago, the Captain returned from Singapore and explained that our friend had taken a turn for the worse. Before the week was out, he was gone.

He was funny, smart and good-hearted. I miss him.

That was a terrible ending to a fun night. (We we're in 中華街, at Kon's Korner).

Captain Japan also sent me a short message about a memorial page, but I haven't heard anything about (since this is a public area of the forum, I won't mention names) his wife and children. Hopefully everything was in order, and Singapore can give them a hardship extension to their visa paperwork. :?:

Postby kotatsuneko » Wed Nov 28, 2012 9:37 am

I used to post here, when I first came to Japan, and for the short time I was there.

GuyJean was, in all honesty a constant inspiration for me. Not just to see the lighter side of life, of life in Japan, his posts and constant good humour, along with several other posters here, encouraged me to do my best, to always be aware of the need to keep an open perspective, plus to question myself and revise my world view.

I won't say my input here improved much, but if it did in any way, a lot of that was down to GuyJean, I always looked up to him, and in all honesty to this day, when I hear the world Gaijin, I still think of him and smile.

I popped by today on a whim, and was deeply shocked, and truly saddened at reading of his passing. My thoughts are with his wife and family.

Rest In Peace GuyJean, I never met you, but your posts here really helped me get through life, and for that I will always be grateful.
