Dr. NakaMats, the Man With 3300 Patents to His Name

Dr. NakaMats, the Man With 3300 Patents to His Name
Smithsonian Magazine, December 1, 2012
ImageNakamatsu--Dr. NakaMats, if you prefer, or, as he prefers, Sir Dr. NakaMats--is an inveterate and inexorable inventor whose biggest claim to fame is the floppy disk. "I became father of the apparatus in 1950," says Dr. NakaMats, who conceived it at the University of Tokyo while listening to Beethoven's Symphony No. 5. "There was no mother."

Though Dr. NakaMats received a Japanese patent in 1952, this virgin birth is disputed by IBM, which insists its own team of engineers developed the device in 1969. Still, to avoid conflicts, Big Blue struck a series of licensing agreements with him in 1979. "My method of digitizing analog technology was the start of Silicon Valley and the information revolution," Dr. NakaMats says. His voice is low, slow and patronizing, solicitously deliberate. "I am a cross between Steve Jobs and Leonardo da Vinci."

(Full Story)

I know there was a thread (by Taro?) about this guy from years back but I couldn't find it.

Anyway, he's as nuckin' futs as always but somehow the Smithsonian Mag figured he was worth writing 4 pages on...

Dr. Nakamatsu aka Dr. NakaMats in two words: fucking fraud.

Dr. Nakamatsu makes many demented claims to fame but he prefers to be known as the inventor of the floppy disk and the CD.
What he invented was a phonograph record of fine wood could be read poorly by light sensors. IBM owns the patent for the floppy disk after it had to agree to a number of computer-related patents that Nakamatsu wildly claimed in the 1970s. The rest-of-the-story is that Dr. NakaMats only really sells are "inventors self-help" and "brain power" programs to suckers and "invents" nothing.
My rant continues...

Totally. I was pretty amazed that a seemingly legit magazine interviewed him.

I once had to listen to a speech by him, because it was given at a conference's banquet that I needed to attend.

What a fornicating bore is this guy. :puke:

From my experience, Western media ejaculates over Orientalist subjects like "weird" Dr. NakaMats (mind you, Western Orientalism regarding Japan comes nowhere near the local variety).

Inventor Nakamatsu reveals he has terminal cancer

Eccentric inventor Yoshiro Nakamatsu, popularly known as Dr. NakaMats, has revealed that he has terminal cancer and is expected to live a year and a half.

Nakamatsu said at a news conference Thursday that he was diagnosed with ductal prostate cancer in December and was told by doctors that he was expected to live no longer than until the end of 2015.

“The life of someone who published a paper proving that if you take care of your health properly you could live to be 144 is going to end soon. I was just shocked,” he said.

But he also said the diagnosis prompted him to seek new innovations.

“I’m going to discover a new treatment,” he told reporters.

Nakamatsu, who has patented thousands of inventions, also came up with Yummy Nutri Brain food. According to Nakamatsu, the food will “restructure” the body and enable people to live to the ripe old age of 144. The snacks are a mixture of dried shrimp, seaweed, cheese, yogurt, eel, eggs, beef and chicken liver as well as various vitamins considered helpful to the brain’s thinking process.

While admitting that his malady will be difficult to beat, Nakamatsu said he will seek new approaches and create a medical robot to be used in treating cancer. He said he was willing to share his know-how once his revolutionary project succeeds and help other cancer patients with fundraising drives.

More

I suspect in the coming year he will also invent a coffin made out of carbon nanotubes...

Either that or invent a device to change his date of birth to 26 June 1871. (Happy Birthday for Thursday. Hey, wait a second: he calls a press conference to announce his prognosis on his birthday? His self-promotion knows no boundaries!)

Or maybe it is a plot.

He falsely reports to have a terminal disease, then develops a quack cure involving a robot to make it look like high-tech, survives well beyond the date of his announced death, and then claims that his cure works.

Wonder how much he will earn with this one.

Well, one has to admit the guy is really inventive.

So what happened with his "terminal cancer"?

Did he invent a "cure" after all?
