Why do you think that? No one has ever hassled the J-fleet in the North Pacific AFAIK...

Isn't that because the J-fleet has never whaled in the North Pacific?

You are right.

It seems they are also active in the North-Western Pacific.

This is kind of unknown to the public. Don't know why...

Do you actually like that shit? I've tried it a couple of times but don't get the appeal at all.

It's not possible for us gaijin to get the appeal. In addition to Japan's lauded four seasons, "sticking one up the gaijin" is a seasoning added to every whale dish and discernable only to the uniquely sensitive Japanese pallate.

I'm so sick of this shit "fight" without any real fighting. It can't be that hard to get a hold of torpedoes...even North Korea has those.

First time I ordered it was fore the novelty of it. Second time was because it is damn tasty. :D

I've tried it several times myself ... everything from the canned stuff to meals prepared with it at high-class "ryoutei" ... and I still don't get it. It's just not yummy to my uncultured barbarian tongue.

That's not why I'm against whaling in the southern ocean though. (I've already explained my position on that ad-nauseum. Enough is enough.)

I like a lot of the food that other gaijin avoid and thought that whale sashimi and steak were OK. I've tried the bacon a couple of times though and wasn't impressed at all. Most Japanese I've talked to say they don't actually think whale tastes that good either. Overall, I don't think whale is horrible but paying a premium for something that is poisonous and tastes so-so at best when fish, shellfish, pork, beef, chicken, etc. are so much better doesn't really make a lot of sense.

they had a show on NHK a few weeks back about that... boasting how delicious and nutritious it is for you as they do not have much oil. I will take some extra oil if it does not have deadly poison in it...

Completely agree with you, much more delicious animals out there for the kill that are also cheap.

Cant wait for the price of Tuna to skyrocket and for the anti-whaling team to turn into... anti-tunaing...

Don't get me wrong, the few times I do eat it, I'm usually not paying. I could totally do without it though and am pretty sick of the pointless hunts when they have so much frozen "research" meat already. (that's probably better than the mercury laced meat coming in each hunt) Same goes for the Tuna...can't believe they haven't put a stop to that yet. I'd much rather eat Buffalo meat :D

The frozen stuff is just as mercury laced as the stuff coming in now. They whale because the j-gov't uses our tax dollars to prop up an industry that would otherwise have failed ages ago.

And thus far have not even glanced at the possibility of diverting some of those wasted tax dollars (er ... yen) to disaster recovery or dealing with the nuclear power crisis, because there are so many old buddies in the whaling [s]scam[/s] system.

Our tax yen bail out Tepco, our electricity bills go up, and the whaling ships go out to sea once again ...

About the only good thing about the eventual arrival of a massive budget crunch in Japan is that crap like this (and all the amakudari that goes with it) will finally get the chop.

Marine conservation group acquires ship from unsuspecting Japanese authorities through US firm

The marine conservation group Sea Shepherd has scored a propaganda victory over Japan after it emerged it had bought its newest anti-whaling vessel from the Japanese government, apparently without its knowledge.

The $2m dollar vessel, which previously belonged to the country's meteorological agency, was bought from unsuspecting Japanese authorities by a US company, re-registered in the Pacific island of Tuvalu as the New Atlantis, and delivered to Australia by a Japanese crew.

...

To compound Japan's embarrassment, the 184ft vessel was previously moored in Shimonoseki, home to the country's Antarctic whaling fleet, after being retired by the meteorological agency in 2010.

In its past incarnation as the Seifu Maru, the ice-strengthened vessel's duties included gathering data on ocean currents for Japan's north Pacific whaling fleet, according to Sea Shepherd.

$2,000,000 ?

That could have fed a lot of homeless people.
But feeding homeless people doesn't get you on TV, does it.
