best, day, ever...

Postby Coligny » Sat Jan 05, 2013 12:41 pm

uninstalled rFactor yesterday...

like dropping a deuce after a week long constipation...

planning to microwave all the simbin software sometimes next week...

(for the lucky ones not knowing it, rFactor is a modular... beyond usable... race sim... who out of the box don't support force feedback... for which you need two conflicting plugins at the same time, one for low speed, one for higherspeed... then there's all the addons... randomly incompatible, with no criteria for quality whatsoever... and the tracks... that are... usually junk... also... if you plug anything more or less on the usb bus you might screw up the setup even more... basically... for 100 h of use... you spend 90 trying to make it work, 9 wondering if your driving sucks, or if the config files are fucked... and 1 hour munching on aspirin...)

I never even tried rFactor, because I heard about all of the above. I was big into iRacing, but my Porsche forum league recently started getting really low attendance so I put my account on ice for now. My buddy builds these: http://cxcsimulations.com/ and my other buddy has a business called seattime where he has like 4 of these machines near LAX where you can rent time.

Bit afraid of subscription based sims... I'm a bit of a slow adopter...

Bought F1 2011... not installed still using F1 2010...
Same for WRC... using the #1, #2 still under wrap...

Plus I'm soooo much more involved in sims like Truck and trailers, Scania truck sim, Euro Truck Sim 2 and the 18 wheelers serie...

Also... for cars... I don't use sims that don't have Renault group cars available (Renault, Nissan, Samsung, Lada, Dacia, Alpine, a bit Catheram) for... ehm... religious reasons...

Yer buddie's rigs are cool though, are you posting on http://www.x-simulator.de/forum/ ?

Woah, I didn't even know about that forum. My home rig is pretty simple. Playseat with a stock g27 wheel. I also built a pre-sandy bridge i5 (I think) pc with a radeon card that is really only used for the rig. I was pretty big into iRacing through 2011 and beginning of 2012. The game physics, cars, competition is pretty much unmatched.

For example, I have a ton of seat time around Sebring and some time around road atlanta, lime rock, and road america. The scan of Sebring is outrageous, all the way down to some of the asphalt repairs of the concrete runways that I use in for reals life as reference / braking markers. Also, pro drivers show up all the time. I have a good video of me out braking bryan herta at lime rock, and also Pat Long (porsche cup car drover) used to show up in our pork league.

So, basically, you need to try it out. One problem is the content is expensive. But, like I said, if you get into a good league or focus on one car, like the radical or something, it is sick.

I was actually thinking of shipping my rig to Tokyo for my short time in our office, but it seems like a big pain in the ass, and I think the LCD TV in my apartment is kinda small anyways. Also, I would only really be able to race with the guys in Oz in that time zone.

As usual... it depends on if you plan being an overworked hermit or get shitfaced drunk every evening... On IOs Real Racing 2 is quite cool for quick fixes... the tilt steering is really what was missing from portable gaming systems for race or flight sims.

Another online racing sim possible is Simraceway https://www.simraceway.com/
That you can use with the SRW-S1 "air" tilt steering wheel, no attachement, no pedal (2 proportionnal flaps on the back for accel and braking)

The shape make it a bit limited to race sims... No way to drive a semi Renault Magnum with this... But around 120USD, fit in carry on bag...

And they got few Renault's http://goo.gl/iJNfz (alas really missing the Clio/Cup/V6/Super 1600)

I will have to look into the simraceway one. I suck at those "air" controls though. I have a PS vita, but I mostly use that for rides in the aluminum tube around the US. I have need for speed which is pretty good (GF got me that one for christmas); but mostly play FIFA.

The low HP / non-aero cars get kinda boring to me in Sim racing after awhile; they also changed the tire model in iRacing which basically ruined all the non-aero cars. But, it would be cool if iRacing had a clio cup series or something. You can rent those things to do lapping days at the 'ring. I *hear* iRacing is getting a RUF 911; we'll see.

Expecting to be a somewhat of a worked hermit. I will get out, just not all the time. Also, GF will be visiting during my time at periodic intervals too.

Any tips on karting places anywhere within reasonable train-ride from central tokyo? We have this place out by Dulles airport which is a bunch of fun, but a pain in the ass to drive to from close-in Washington, DC. http://www.allsportsgp.com/

I wish I did but the only place I've been to was out in the boonies past me in the east of Tokyo. T'was a good time and all but it was a kiddy sized track and the cars were about as responsive as your average kei car :???:

Bummer. I sort of figured that was the case. If I somehow find something while I am there, I will post it here in this thread. Even over here, I have ever only found the one I posted and two places in southern california.

But on a side note... around Gamagori/Toyohashi... while there is 1 RC airfield and one street+offroad RC track (but it's an expedition to go there, you have to prep food and water for few days in case you get lost and can't call for a rescue chopper). There are plenty of "week end track day" circuits and even few offroad trail parks... But you have to bring your own whip... needless to say I never even though aboot going there...
