The whole family has been staring out the window the last 10 minutes with jaws dropped. Wife has basically been muttering "f***ing China" under her breath since yesterday. Never quite seen it like this.

The haze doesn't seem to be anywhere near that bad out here but the pollen is ridiculous and of course everything is covered in it. That's crazy though.. damn.

Yup. Aeolian dust. Asian dust. Yellow sand. Yellow wind.

That thar is sand and dust from the deserts of Mongolia and China.

Not so bad up here, but we are having a windstorm like I have never heard or seen (outside of a typhoon, that is). It is HOOOOWLING!

It's against the law to publish that info in Tokyo---Just look closely at the Real-time Air Quality Index Visual Map

If click on the map, you'll also find the data from Yokohama "mysteriously" stopped.

Edit: Just found an article in English.

A huge dust storm hit Tokyo Sunday, blanketing the city with brown dust that darkened the skies and rapidly transformed what had been a clear and sunny day.
Visibility in the capital deteriorated quickly as dry dust particles whirled through the air.
Meteorologists said the phenomenon was caused by a sudden cold front, and was not linked with the suffocating pollution that hung over the Chinese capital Beijing last winter.
"A rapidly developing low pressure system in the north was moving down south. It was bringing a snow storm in the north, and strong winds in Tokyo and surrounding areas," said a meteorologist at the Japan Meteorological Agency.
"In the Kanto region (Tokyo and surrounding areas), the strong winds picked up dry dust particles from the ground, which lowered visibility," he said.

Tokyo has not invented automated air pollution measuring yet so no measurements are available in real time (J-bureaucrats don't want the people to have proof of their incompetence/fraud).
However, Tokyo government does provide last year's air pollution records in a "convenient" CSV format, in a ZIP file :???: : http://www.kankyo.metro.tokyo.jp/air/ai ... ement.html

Sorry to spoil the conspiracy theory, but a version of the Japanese page is available. However there's some blah about the normal system being down since January due to "処理プログラムの不具合" if it helps build a case for deliberate incompetence (presumably they couldn't be bother to update or add an explanation to the English version of the page).

d00d, there is no data point since after march 10...

Ok, Tarochan is a cold war dinosaur ready to see a commie invasiun plot every time his Derrick rerun is late on TV... But there is a strong case of

Apart from from the two data points on March 11th?

I'm more than happy to accept there's a lot of uncomfortable stuff going down (whether deliberate or through incompetence), it's just that I prefer not to jump to conclusions on the basis of one data point ("English version of site down - the whole system must be intentionally unplugged").

there's a fair bit of soil blowing off the field over the road due to the wind ( edge of the 23ku) but no duststorm like Sunday.
