I put my hand up at the risk of being labelled out of touch, but I'm not sure that is anti-female. You might be able to make the argument that it objectifies women, but those lasses are portrayed as very very willing participants.

Sadly, most advertising I see recently seems to be designed to annoy on a brutal, blatant level, purely to do anything to snag hold of your attention. The charming, humorous storytelling while still presenting the information the client wanted to be conveyed, seems to have gone the way of the brawny Bornhoffen baker. I wish more advertisements had that art. There are few advertisements played now which will be remembered thirty years later.

Advertising is insidous, cunning and wickedly manipulative. One of the few brighter aspects of the Internet is that it has destroyed the power of unavoidable pervasive advertising...for the time being.

Though I remember the more imaginative Bornhoffen, the ads I remember verbatim from decades past (and there are lots and lots and lots of them) are almost all inane, repetitive and hypnotic.

I was back "home" earlier this year and noticed that the current advertising trend in America seems to be poor attempts at irony and self deprecation or feigned apathy. I guess the hipster douche bag market is now their prime target. It's painful to watch 5th Avenue attempt dry humor.

NHK -- July 18, 2013
A man operating a radio-controlled helicopter near Tokyo has apparently caused his own death.
Police officers on Thursday discovered the man in his 60s lying dead from a head wound. They found a 3-meter-long helicopter crashed nearby.
The accident occurred near a rice paddy in Kimitsu, Chiba Pref...the man was using the helicopter to spray pesticide over the paddy when it collided with him.

I reckon things will be tough for the advertising industry from now on. It's gotta be up there with newspapers and the idiot box as industries doomed by the Internet.

I still have huge issues with the concept that all bread seems to have to have sugar and fat in it here, which is the main reason I wish I had the equipment and the patience to easily make my own.

The sugar is needed for the fermentation process and to give the crust a nice brown color. The fat keeps the bread fresh for a longer time. I use oil instead of butter or fat: just 25g on a flour mixture of 440g.

Thanks Russell I am aware that there are breads (or as I prefer "breads") which use sugar, but there are also breads which have only flour, salt, yeast and water as ingredients. These breads manage to rise quite adequately. These are the breads that I prefer. You would not, however, be aware that such a thing were possible here.

You are possibly using 4 grams too much oil.

Quite possible that there are breads not containing sugar.

Anyway, my breads contain a minimal amount of sugar: just one big spoon. It does not make my bread taste sweet.

I tried many combinations of ingredients to get something good out of the bread machine, and ended up with some sugar in it. There were times I forgot to put the sugar in, and while not exactly a disaster, it definitely was not as good. I can imagine that some hand-made breads may not require sugar.

Regarding your claim that I use 4g too much oil ( :) ), important is the balance between wet matter and dry matter, but a few grams off does not make much difference in my experience.

This is an extremely heretical statement to make, according to the video which inspired this tangent, and which was also the source of the 4 grams too much joke.

I am sure there are many "better" videos out there than this one (anything by "J0sh" for example), but this is just an edited clip from a staged video made in 2011 by a former Seoul film student with two western expats and a Korean female acting out the scene.
Video of expats abusing Korean woman 'staged'
The Korea Herald/Asia News Network
Wednesday, July 17, 2013

An online video showing a Korean woman apparently being harassed by a group of Western men in a nightclub was staged, two men who say they acted in the video have claimed.
The video, which has caused outrage online in recent days and appeared in Korean and foreign media including the Washington Post webpage, appears to show a number of men sexually and verbally harassing an intoxicated Korean woman. The men are shown cursing at the woman, filming her chest and forcing her own finger up her nose and into her mouth.

All? You do realize what "all" means, right? (Or is this an "all" in the sense that the North Merkin baseball championship is a "world" series?)

There's been some good comedy movies and some fantastic old TV shows (I haven't watched for a long time, so I'm willing to be proved wrong) down through the ages, but Merkins hit more than they miss when it comes to comedy. Except in standup comedy, where I was wrong, as there are many Merkins who excel (though they're probably Candyan).
When I think of Merkin humor in general, I think of the boss in Good Morning Vietnam who tried to show Robin Williams how to be funny....

SDH, even if the teams are based in the US and Canada if you look at the players, it really is a "World Series."

Why does this strike me as being typical of the humor that can tickle the Teutonic funny bone? (Though not quite as chuckle-raising for them as, say, a pogrom?)

I think Eurovision is pretty funny

I admit my own sense of humor is highly unsophisticated, but I do enjoy refined humor of the type that thrived in Ireland and Britain in the 1960s to 1980s. But I can also get a good laugh out of someone smashing another person over the head with a plastic hammer.

Russell wrote:Yeah, and you Anglo-Saxons can't even imagine the funny things broadcast in the rest of the world.

Guilty as charged. We in Australia were fortunate to have multicultural TV from the early 1980s onward, so we got access to a broader view of the world at the time than most other places in the Anglosphere except, perhaps, South Africa, but even there you had to speak Bastardized Dutch anyway and they just pretended the darkie languages didn't exist.

Stop exaggerating SDH. Everyone knows that having a word or two of isiZulu in your repertoire means that you can specify how brown you like your toast and how starched you like your collars, and you can tell if the help are plotting against you. Still can't get the boys to deadhead the roses properly though.

(We had a Swahili Phrase Book as a curio. Unusually for the genre, it had phrases with actual practical use, such as "Bwana requires hot water for his shave every morning.")

You mean this? Skip to 2:20 to avoid the explanatory introduction in German (why do they need that?)

I must admit, even though it is in English, I did not know that.

There is something very German to this humor: it is slightly funny, as well as stylish, but it does not get me rolling over the floor.

Well, there must be a reason why it is unknown in Holland, even though we are each others' neighbors and can watch each others' TV channels...
