Amazing how sometime so small and trivial (to me at least) could have such high value.

Some people have WAY WAY too much time on their hands.

In this case I'd say money more than time.

I was imagining people sitting at home, poring over their collection of Pokemon cards (or whatever) and obsessing over every little detail and making sure they had the complete set and willing to shell out tens of thousands of dollars to complete the set - and for what purpose?

Now stamps, coins etc have cultural, historical and political ecosphere around them relating to real world situations so, although I have little interest in these hobbies either, I can see the "value" in collecting the whole set etc. Even sports cards have a real world situation attached to them.

But trading cards relating to a manga character? Really what a supreme waste of time and money. OK, I now have a target on my back for all of the anime geeks for my blasphemy, but perhaps one of them could put down their pitchfork and explain why this is important?

That said - each to their own... but as long as I am allowed to mock them periodically, they are free to waste their time and money as they see fit.

Rabid sports fans are the same as Trekkies, comic book nerds, and anime otaku ..... I take that back. They're actually worse since they have a nasty habit of rioting and beating people to death for supporting the other team.

Just heard on the news that tickets for the Olympics will range in price from 25,000 Yen to 150,000 Yen. That sounds just as much like a waste of money as Pokemon cards...

A bigger waste because the Olympics suck. Even sports that should be good like boxing are ruined by Olympic rules.

First thing I thought of:

You may be on to something. There's the very creepy rape culture surrounding American football (Steubenville, Vanderbilt, Torrington) that I find appalling.

"Pokémon GO" hasn't.
The game is a no go and failing to launch in Japan (and maybe they're lucky).
