The report, monitored in Tokyo, was extremely short on detail and identified the woman only as "Kazumi Kitagawa."

Japanese woman swims to N. Korea seeking asylum
Mainichi Shimbun, Oct. 28, 2003A Japanese woman in her 20s is seeking asylum in North Korea after swimming across a river from China, government sources said Tuesday.
Her action is not politically motivated, ... visited the Japanese Consulate in Shengyang in April and asked that she be allowed to defect to North Korea, but was persuaded by consulate staffers to abandon her plans.

... A foreign ministry official in Tokyo told reporters North Korea's embassy in Beijing had informed Tokyo's mission there on Monday that a Japanese woman had entered North Korea and that the "third country" was China.

The official did not identify the woman or give her age other than to say she was a Japanese national, although he said the foreign ministry had been in contact with her family.Kyodo News agency said the woman was in her 20s.

The foreign ministry has no information on the woman's current whereabouts in North Korea, or whether she has any Korean ancestry, or affiliation to groups sympathetic to North Korea, the official said, stressing that she had broken no Japanese law and her family had not asked for help.

The AUM Shinrikyo cult, which now calls itself Aleph, said Wednesday that a Japanese woman said to have entered North Korea seeking "asylum" may be one of its former members.

Officials of the cult said there is a former member whose name and date of birth are identical to that of the woman, but they have yet to confirm if the woman and the former member are the same person.
