What has happened to Gaijinpot - New look

Postby Ninpo » Fri Oct 18, 2013 7:21 pm

Hi all,

I just went to Gaijinpot and the site has changed quite dramatically!

I don't think that there was any issue with the forum, I now think that they wanted a complete reboot of the site and couldn't do so with the forum the way it was...

White text on a white image will always get a  from me.

My conspiracy theory is that the forums were off message for what they were looking for for the site. It might have brought traffic, but not necessarily the right traffic and might even have been a PR liability, so they did not see benefit in doing substantial maintenance work.

The neo-GaijinPot seems to have or will have forums again according to these pages on the new site:

Methinks it's just someone setting up the reconstituted forum in read-only mode with some sort of default/simple/what-the-heck-let's-get-it-working theme to keep the Google-fu.

I was able to log in using a long abandoned username/password combo, see that there were no messages. There is no button for posting or replying, however.

¿Qué?

All English, apart from the title of their first blog entry. Comments via FB accounts only please kindly good Sir.

I wonder about your computer sometimes, M de Coligny.

Ahh, I see that the jobs section is multilingual, but that is a function of who is placing the jobs and what they are looking for.

I should write a script to automatically add this beneath every 2nd Coligny post.

PS it's not the language, it's the content.

Once again, my sincere apologies. My crystal ball which predicts which times Coligny jokingly writes japandjingo but does not in this case mean 日本人が普段に使う言葉・日本語 is at the polishers for a refresh tonight.

OK, is your computer used solely by you? Because I have a completely Japanese language environment here, including menus on the browser, but the settings are that English has a higher priority than Japanese and I got so that I wasn't even aware that there was a Japanese language option on that page. If you can make that kind of setting without freaking out other users, I would recommend it. What the hell, go to town, put French at higher priority than English even!

I will say that the white text on Fuji snow works better in Japanese than in English.

And WTF, the English blog entry is titled in Japanese, the Japanese entry titled in English. They is some craaaaaaaaaaaazy dudes.

And all of a sudden I am distracted: you have a Yanpa tab on your customised menu?

But I doubt they fuck around with the language settings since they all speak english...

y u mad bro?

1. Have you ever seen a french keyboard? It's so bad that they don't even use them.

2. Every IT professional worth a dime that I have met here has the eigo version of windows (or what ever the company uses) and bitches endlessly about the japanese version even when they are J-native.

They are probably afraid that all those potter refugees won't return once they get used to FG, so they are now setting up their forum again...

Are you freaked out by the A and Z being in the wrong place or something? (Disclaimer: I can type more-or-less blind UK, US, German and Japanese keyboard layouts, the only thing which really drives me mad is the CTRL key not being where God intended it to be).

Personally I can't recall encountering a Japanese native speaker, even among reasonably non-incompetent IT professionals, who voluntarily uses the English version of their OS. I used Japanese Windows quite a lot in the dim and distant past, as a pure Japanese environment I found it fine. My main gripe - and it's a general Windows thing not limited to Japan - is that multilingual support sucks. (My other main gripe is that the East Asian font rendering still sucks).

If I remember correctly the right hand is fucked too. M and various other keys are misplaced.

As far as the IT people, I said "IT professionals". You know, the people that can solve real IT problems not IT drones that spend ten hours a day typing the same amount of code that the average indian can do in three hours for thirty bucks.

It's 2 am and just signed off for the week, you don't even want to know what all I did this week. Actually I can't even tell you. I really just wanted to say WTF Coligny has a Yanpa bookmark? That is kinda weird dude...

And also the only keyboard that is worth ever even talking about, let alone arguing about, is the old clicky IBMs (yes that is the technical term.) I'm on a little bluetooth US layout right now with no numpad which sucks but I kinda like the keyboard itself. Much prefer the JIS layout tbh but it is not working in my setup which is REDACTED on a REDACTED emulator because REDACTED. Angry nerds lol.

Click click click. Yup, my Unicomp here at home is working fine

I got a HHKB lite at work, which is also not bad, though the Japanese layout confuses people.

I'm in IT, and back when I used to use Windows, I used Japanese windows. It was fine insofar as it was no different from English windows, with the exception of the language of course.

That all said, after having used a Mac for three years, I don't ever see myself switching back, unless Apple really drops the ball.

Yeah I may get a Unicomp eventually, have heard nothing but good about them. My buddy got one and said everyone in the office was pissed at him at first cause they are so noisy (didn't matter he's the boss) but now they all want one haha. I also looked at Happy Hacker but don't remember why exactly didn't get one. Did you import your Unicomp? When I checked they were about $150 minimum shipped?

I've been using Apple stuff since the first grade (Apple ][+) and rolling with the punches along the way. IOS7 really bugged me at first just about as much as anything they have ever done but it kind of grows on you after a bit. And now I actually kind of like it.
