Meanwhile, they can say it was a win for China because the message that China is not going to accept the status quo and is prepared to escalate the situation has gone out to the world.

While that seems SOP in China (as well in Japan...though without the killing), I think they are beyond that option when they are sending out armed "patrols" of their BS claims.

The fact that Japan will cower away and hide behind their allies is why China is playing their cards this way.

What proved it even more so was when 2 USAF B-52s flew in their air zone unwarranted with no retaliation. I figure if Japan were to pull a ballzy move like that, shit would have hit the fan.

You probably did not get the news, but Japan already flew war planes through the new zone the first day.

If that is the case, then Tsuru is spot on.

Fuckin silly though... Japan buys the land and China claims it's airspace...

And them B52 were unarmed... Not that it matters... But the fact the US insisted on that is a bit weird...

Nope.
They should have thought through the different scenarios that could emerge..

Agreed. What a remarkable show of incompetent policy making and planning. I read a paper a few years back arguing that what the world needs to fear is not China's new power, confidence and strategic vision but rather the shocking stupidity and incompetence amongst the new class of nepo-cratic elites. The piece was shockingly ethnocentric, even by the standards of white liberal political economy, but it certainly jibes with what I saw at grad school. All but 2 of 20 or so Chinese Monbusho award holders were braying ninnies that couldn't be trusted to plan a simple exchange party never mind a national defence.

I think these might be 2 different facets of the overall topic. I think this Harold person has a good point, but if they could have got the esteemed Professor Falken to comment, well, that would have been a WOPR of a story.

It would have been much more productive if China had just sent out a circular asking their neighbours to a nice game of chess. Sometimes it's good when life imitates art.

Also, shocking stupidity on the part of the Jpn gov't to pressure ANA and JAL into non-compliance. That worries me much more than this rather typical Chinese buffoonery. It certainly shows that Abe is prone to a sort of Cheney/Rumsfeld level stupidity, given the lack of knowledge of the unknown unknowns in this equation.

Missing 2 things:

1- They are pissing off the whole region, we are focusing on Japan, but their claims are so wide that it can be seen as just a first step.

2- Maybe they are also trying to refocus the population by declaring outside threats 9-11 style (even if they don't need this to pass freedom crushing laws). But they also sort of really seems to want the ressources there (Iraq style). That would mean they can't just do some posturing but have to go for real...
Also I don't think they would be too afraid before killing good part of their populace if it means keeping the remaining ones in line...

Time to re-read Red Storm Rising again...

Aren't the oyaji's still in power while the new elite just practice getting richer for now ?

Japan seems to have the same "expandable population for greater good" approach as China... easier to spot, especially after Fukushima... But they don't seem to realize that they are a bit short staffed for this kind of move...

Yeah, that's a nice summary of how and why Abe is such an inbred retard. He has at least 12 different tactics that would play to Japan's relative strengths and instead he chooses the Wall of Meat option, the one card they can't play against China.

Not to mention that his first recruits are airplane riding taxpaying voters in a rather open democracy that still hasn't entirely embraced his spastic anachronistic sabre rattling. Which is to say, his potential core support group.

Skyvector has kindly posted the Chinese ADIZ on its map (which is global and free and awesome, by the way)

http://skyvector.com/?ll=29.19053283054 ... 304&zoom=8

This link shows the upper airways that most traffic in the area uses, and airspace divisions as they exist today between Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and China.
What China has actually done, is take a ruler and take a large chunk of not only Japanese airspace but also of South Korean and Taiwanese airspace and demand all traffic entering it report to them.

I suppose it's bad form in diplomatic relations to tell them to get fucked, but you have to wonder if China actually has the capability of enforcing any such demand.

U.S. sends new submarine-hunting jets to Japan amid East Asia tension

The U.S. Navy's first advanced P-8 Poseidon patrol aircraft has arrived in Japan, the start of a deployment that will upgrade America's ability to hunt submarines and other vessels in seas close to China as tension in the region mounts.

The deployment, planned before China last month established an air defense zone covering islands controlled by Japan and claimed by Beijing, includes six aircraft to be delivered to Kadena air base on Okinawa this month.

The first arrived on Sunday, a spokesman for the U.S. Navy told Reuters. The mission in the waters west of Japan's main islands will be the new aircraft's first anywhere.

The jet, built by Boeing Co based on its 737 passenger plane, has been built to replace the aging propeller-powered Lockheed Martin P-3 Orion patrol aircraft, which has been in service for 50 years.

Packed with the latest radar equipment and armed with torpedoes and anti-ship missiles, the P-8 is able to fly further and stay out on mission longer than the P-3.

Looks like China overplayed its hand.

This is the right move.

Finally, the US focuses on the real threat instead of their insignificant Islamic adversaries.

It is English (as well) all right. I wonder if it comes from bridge/whist or poker? I thought bridge/whist but perhaps not.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Biden: China air zone raises risk of accidents

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden voiced strong opposition Tuesday to China's new air defense zone above a set of disputed islands, showing a united front with an anxious Japan as tension in the region simmered.

"This action has raised regional tensions and increased the risk of accidents and miscalculation," he said.

Biden said the U.S. is coordinating closely with allies Japan, South Korea and others, adding that the U.S. has an interest in lowering tensions in the region.

"I will be raising these issues with great specificity when I meet with Chinese leadership the day after tomorrow," Biden said.
