Ooh, I want to see these obscene dances. I wonder if they are as bad as what you can expect at a high school dance in the US these days?

Not to be an apologist, but could it be possible that the Japanese were mispronouncing their Chinese? They don't have much luck with English, so maybe someone said something incorrectly? 8O

Sounds like they have been repressed for far too long.. This is what communism breeds... too socially inept to handle obscenities..

No doubt the Japanese were doing something strange.. or obscene.. but it is at a University.. and they might have been drinking.. LOL

Just adding an update. Fair bit of stupidity on both sides I'd say.

Japanese apologize for 'red bra' performance in China

XIAN, China -- Japanese students have apologized for an "indecent" performance at a school festival here which incited violent protests among locals, sources said Saturday.

More than 1,000 Chinese students took to the streets Friday after a lewd performance by three students and a teacher at Northwest China University in Xian Wednesday.

Officials of the university have sacked the teacher and expelled the three students involved.

The officials discussed the issue with the four Japanese from Friday night until Saturday morning, demanding an apology.

In response, the Japanese have signed and submitted a letter stating they had no evil intentions when making the performance and that they had been ignorant of Chinese people's feelings and customs.

During a cultural festival at the university, the students allegedly wore red bras over T-shirts and paper cups over their crotch while dancing to music.

The performance enraged Chinese students, inciting them to march on the streets in protest Thursday and Friday.

Youth league members of the Chinese Communist Party organized the traditional arts festival and those involved called the students' performance terribly indecent.

Sources said the decision by the teacher and the three students to leave and submit a letter of apology has been conveyed to the students who spearheaded protest demonstrations.

With the departure of the four Japanese, protests are expected to calm down, the sources said.

During demonstrations Thursday, two Japanese students living in a school dormitory of the university were injured after Chinese demonstrators hit them, Japanese diplomats said. Chinese Foreign Ministry cautioned the Japanese Embassy in Beijing over the performance, while Japanese diplomats expressed regret that Chinese protesters had injured Japanese students. Uptight isn't the right word. Those that assaulted the unrelated Japanese students are racists, not uptight. It was a strike of oppurtunity. Odds of diciplinary action taken against the racist Chinese in the assault: 0.

Another nail in the coffin for China's ODA funds.

This description sounds very tame to me. So far, this is longest description in the English press. See also Anti-Japan protests continue in China Yomiuri Shimbun November 3, 2003

CULTURE CLASH: Curtain still raised on Chinese protest over `obscene' skit
IHT/Asahi: November 3, 2003
The four Japanese performed the skit Wednesday during the university's cultural festival. Most of the other performances, such as traditional dances, were of a serious nature.
For their skit, however, the four wore red bras over their T-shirts and paper cups in the front of their trousers, apparently to suggest male genitals. The phrase ``What are you looking at?'' was written on their hats.
Some of the four apparently removed cut-up pieces of paper from their bras and tossed them into the crowd.
At the end of the skit, which was interrupted in mid-performance, the three students reportedly intended to turn their backs to the audience to show they had written the words ``Japan'' and ``China'' as well as ``heart sign'' implying ``love.'' By expressing the phrase ``Japan loves China'' or ``China loves Japan,'' the four apparently wanted to promote friendly relations between the two countries.
However, the skit caused an immediate uproar among Chinese students, and was halted in the middle of the performance by a Chinese teacher.
A local Chinese involved in Japanese affairs who asked not to be identified, said that, generally speaking, Chinese students are not accustomed to off-color shows.
``The skit put on by the four Japanese would not have caused a problem in Japan. But, in China, it is too offensive,'' he said.

Asahi EDITORIAL about "Avulgar stage performance"

Postby Taro Toporific » Thu Nov 06, 2003 11:43 am

EDITORIAL: Bitter lesson from Xian
Asahi Shimbun, Nov 6
Japanese studying abroad must have a purpose.
Avulgar stage performance given by three Japanese students and a Japanese teacher at a university in China's ancient capital of Xian upset the audience and provoked angry anti-Japanese demonstrations...Unlike Japanese universities, which have long been derided as leisure facilities for youngsters, universities in China are intended for serious study...

... These language students are not required to pass tough screening. Anybody can enroll for a language program in China as long as they have enough money to pay the tuition.
That explains why quite a number of students don't work hard to master Chinese or try to learn about Chinese culture by associating with local people. Instead, they spend most of their time with their compatriots. There has been no end to cases where Japanese students have become embroiled in drug use, consorting with prostitutes or acts of violence. ...

Blah, blah, blah

I wish! I haven't talked "foreign" in more than two weeks. I thought most of us of the FG worked in Japanese environments...or at least that's why I'm here.
