What would do in Japan?

"I would study Japanese history because that is one of the best ways to learn about a country. Especially, Japan's traditions are very unique, so if I learned them, I could enjoy watching movies more because a film like "Matrix" often depicts Japanese martial arts and so on."

That's Japan Today for you, POS running on IIS using ADO to talk with the database. They should scrap that thing and move to Java.

Kamome my friend.. last night the JT site had a "catastrophic error" on the link that CS posted.. so we all went off on a tangent.. (you snooze... :wink:

But back to the thread at hand.. I read the comments and people were saying what they would do if they were Japanese for a day.. it was all fairly mean-spirited juvenile..

What would I do?? Probably not much different to what I do now?

However, if I was a man for a day... there are lots of things that I would like to do/try!! :P

Okay, I'll explain:
Japan Today uses Microsoft technologies:
IIS - Microsoft Internet Information Server - it's a web server
ASP - Microsoft Active Server Pages - a scripting language for writing programs that do things on IIS, like forums, advertisements, etc...
ADO - Active Data Objects - a tool for programmers to access a database, containing things like polls, fourm messages, user logins, etc...

The trouble with Microsoft stuff is that you really need to know what you're doing, otherwise you'll end up writing something that scales (performs) like Japan Today (i.e. crap). Microsoft's tools makes it very easy to do the wrong thing.

FG is written in PHP (a perl-like scripting language that resembles ASP), but the team that wrote phpBB is concerned with performance, so the site runs pretty well.

Well, you can divide the membership of FG into two general groups: techies and non-techies. I define techie in the broadest possible terms: bloggers, website operators, engineers, audiovisual, etc. I believe the techies outnumber non-techies on FG by a huge margin. I am firmly in the non-techie camp (obviously), so I can't usually contribute in threads that use alphabet soup abbreviations like IIS, ASP, etc.

So basically, the level of participation I can muster in a thread like this is throwing in a :puke: or a :bukkake: and leave it at that.

Note: Being a non-techie in an arena dominated by techies can be a lot of fun and a nice diversion from my non-techie real world experience. :idea:

Yes but there are sub-groups with-in the techies.. ie the MAC techies and the Windoze techies, the web-designers and the network engineers.. then there are people like me who doesn't really belong in this group as I am a bio-chemist but just happens to work with software now.... but I am pretty good with a keitai. :wink:

There are so many fields within digital media and usually people rely on each other to help out.

For example, CS called me a weenie yesterday coz I wasn't sure if I had downloaded an SDK properly onto a windows machine.. but actually I had.. :bounce: yeah!! Usually I am a weenie though.. :oops:

For non-techies, the subgroups within the techies don't matter at all. From my perspective, you are all techies who speak a different language (when talking about technical stuff).

Techie = :alien:
Non-techie = :confused:
