U.S. Ambassador to China Gary Locke to resign
November 19, 2013|By Barbara Demick

BEIJING -- Gary Locke, the first Chinese American ambassador to Beijing, said Wednesday he will leave his post early next year to rejoin his wife and three children in Seattle.

The former Commerce secretary and two-term governor of Washington said his reasons for stepping down were purely personal, revolving around the education of his children, two of whom are in high school.

"We wanted our kids to have junior and senior year of high school back in the United States," Locke said in a telephone interview on Wednesday from the Beijing Capital International Airport, where he was about to fly on a trade mission to Kunming in southwestern China.

Locke said he had personally informed President Obama of his decision to resign and that the president was supportive. "He is facing the same situation with his older daughter, Malia, who will be heading off to college in a few years," Locke said. "He is very aware of how fast our children are growing up and how little time we have with them."

Like many of his predecessors in the Beijing post, Locke has served a relatively short term, arriving in August 2011. The 63-year-old ambassador has been a relatively unassuming figure here, best known among ordinary Chinese for his modest lifestyle...

Thanks, I did not see that.

That's funny. What BS. Like when corporate biggies and sleazy gov types get axed and they say, "wanted to spend more time with family. "
They forget to mention the investment US embassy has been making in air cleaners last few months. lol.

Normally, to become ambassador one needs to contribute to the presidential erection campaign.

I guess that's for the popular countries.

Don't know how popular China is...

Yeah, but he should have realized that before he draped himself in it.

He looks plainly stupid in this way.

Not that he would look so much less stupid if he had done it "right"...

I give them more credit....Like Hashimoto enabling the election of the most nationalistic regime since those that led Japan to near annihilation, the emergence of these nitwits allows the general populace to become ever more nationalistic without appearing to be threatening.

I'll bet I know where this is going:
Kono sex slave statement to be scrutinized

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Friday the Abe administration will launch a study team to re-examine the 1993 Kono statement.

The statement was the first official acknowledgment that the Imperial Japanese Army and government forced women to provide sex to troops in military brothels.

The statement, issued by then-Chief Cabinet Secretary Yohei Kono, was based on testimony by 16 South Korean former “comfort women” selected by Seoul who said they were forced into prostitution.

The validity of their testimony has never been scrutinised.

“We will re-examine it while maintaining the confidential nature of the testimony. Then the administration will consider how to handle this issue again,” Suga said during a session of the Lower House Budget Committee, adding that the administration will share the research results with the Diet.

Something like: "Oh! Oh! Wait! We've discovered that all the testimonies were BS so the Kono statement is null and void! Hah! We ain't apologising to nobody! How do we know that the testimonies were BS? Well, you see, that's confidential (see the last paragraph, above) so we can't tell you. Sorry."

That'll sure help relieve tension in the region.

Just the fact that they're going to "re-examine" the Kono statement is a very bad sign.

Just imagine that Anne Frank would have been one of those sex slaves.

Would her diary then be so popular in Japan?...

And the expected reaction ...

South Korean leader cautions Abe against revising landmark apology

SEOUL – South Korean President Park Geun-hye on Saturday cautioned that Japan will face isolation if it pushes ahead with a move to revisit its official apology over wartime sex slavery.

...

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s administration is moving to reconsider then-Chief Cabinet Secretary Yohei Kono’s 1993 apology for the comfort women, putting further pressure on the two countries’ already frayed ties.

“Historical truth is in testimony from the survivors. Japan would only bring isolation on itself if it turns a deaf ear to their testimony and sweeps it under the rug for political benefits,” Park said.

She called on Japan to follow Germany in repenting for past wrongs so the two neighbors can put bitter memories behind them and “move forward for a new era of cooperation, peace and prosperity.”

If such a document exists why on God's green earth would the US Government keep it confidential? Grasping at straws my man. Grasping at straws.

In the meantime Japan's reputation and commercial interests are being damaged - make no mistake about that. You may feel that Japan can afford it but the economic data tells another story. Yet again, the J right wing are forcing the Japanese people to pay the price for their deluded and offensive beliefs.

I have always wondered why, given the comprehensive defeat in Burma, the end of the war in Europe allowing vast and battle hardened resources to be sent to this part of the world, American bombers now based in Okinawa roaming the skies at will and Russia about to join in too, the J Right Wing couldn't get their head around:

The alternative for Japan is prompt and utter destruction.

But no, they had to inflict yet worse on their own people and others by ignoring the reality and desperately trying to preserve their own skins. And the same sort of people now want to lecture us about what was really happening at the time.

Hey Take, it's not the "J-reputation" at stake...I'm sure not every shinzo, kenji, and taro were in on it. It was officially mandated shit...so it's the J-gov/military reputation being called into question here, and there isn't much or a reputation to undermine there. Why is it so hard to just let the officials sincerely apologize for their predecessors actions and try to better relations with S. Korea for now in the future? Considering how quickly S. Korea is coming up, it's obviously in Japan's best interest...

This is getting messier and messier. There's some seriously warped logic getting thrown around.

Defiant Nippon Ishin nationalists push for Kono statement review

Some 500 people who attended Monday’s meeting, held on Girls’ Day, fervently applauded each time lawmakers said the statement was based on “falsifications” and called Kono a traitor. The party has about 60 members in the Diet.

A voluntary resolution was adopted at the end of the meeting to demand that the government review the statement and summon Kono and former Ambassador to China Sakutaro Tanino, who were involved in drafting the statement, to the Diet.

“I heard from a former Japanese soldier that the comfort women thanked the military because they were able to send money back home . . . . The South Korean allegation that the Imperial Japanese military made women serve as sex slaves or forcefully recruited some 200,000 women is fabricated,” said Nippon Ishin member Nariaki Nakayama of the House of Representatives.

Kono is now a traitor? This is so messed up, with some nasty shades of lynch mob thrown in for good measure.

And this gem is just too twisted.

“If the testimony is based on truth, the South Korean government should encourage us to scrutinize it. They are against it because they are aware that there are some issues with the statement,” Yamada said at the meeting.

And I bet he was really proud of himself for coming up with that nugget of immature fatuity.

Sickening and scary all at the same time.

The j govt are just being dicks and have their heads way too far up their asses. Say sorry, get a few people to bow and what not, then benefit from the better relationship.
