Small locked safe - disposal suggestions

Postby GomiGirl » Tue May 27, 2014 1:12 pm

I have a small safe - it is locked and I don't have the key.

Not sure what is inside it but it is probably just papers and not worth trying to open it.

I want to get rid of it but not sure how to do this without costing 20,000 yen (I got a quote).

Any useful suggestions?

Call a locksmith and get him to open it first, just to be sure.
He'll probably know how to dispose of it too.

If you're going the locksmith route, use one of the local mom & pop shops. They tend to be a lot cheaper than the big chains that advertise everywhere, and the service is generally better too.

I really want to dispose it and if I can see what is in it first that is a bonus but I doubt there is anything useful or valuable in there.

If you're pretty sure there's nothing of value in there, why not place an ad on Craigslist or Freecycle or wherever like this:

One small safe to give away, uwanted inheritance from jeweller uncle. Rattles when moved. Keys were not included in the inheritance, safe currently locked. Excellent practice object for locksmith apprentice.

Here is the safe lock.

I did put an ad up on Craigslist but it was deleted. Maybe they thought it was proceeds from a robbery or something. I had an add on the Mottanai facebook group but no takers.

Might have to try the Japanese classifieds rather than the English speaking ones.

In which case, http://www.agekuda.net/

I almost got me a nice old school 29" Mamachari for 3000 yen last visit. Seems I was 3 hours late

Anyhoo, they seem to have a good setup there.

BTW, you might also try calling a Recycle Shop type outfit and explain it's theirs to take. I once gave away a staircase Tansu that he quoted 30,000 yen for removal on the phone to the landlord. When he showed up and saw it his drooling saliva sort of gave him away.

BTW, I do have a feeling you are in for what in Kyoto we used to call An Education in The Ways of an Ancient People. Keep taking deep breaths as necessary and enjoy the ride. And think horizontally. AKA weird. It's the one ploy few of them can match.

So, you need the combination and the key to open it, do you?

There are quite a few videos on YT on how to open safes without the combination or key, so if you are up to the challenge, why don't you try them out?

Alternatively, find someone with a disk grinder, and it will be done in no time. It's a pity I don't live nearby, otherwise I would like to have some fun opening it...

An angle/disc grinder sounds like the easy solution. There are plenty around - any workshop/handyman for hire will have one. Perhaps try the silver employment agency at City Hall?

As for getting rid of it - what's the problem with just putting it with the normal rubbish on metal day? Again, a call to city hall will clear up any doubts.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Oh, and if you use a disk grinder, make sure you wear eye protection. I use goggles in combination with a screen attached to my helmet. You don't want a glowing hot iron particle in your eyes. It's also better to wear proper working gloves (leather).

So, GG, did you succeed to open it?

Dying to know what was in there making that rattling sound...
