Saudi student goes on the rampage in Asakusa, vandalizing Buddha statues and jizos and stuff.

MSN wrote:

Saudi Arabian vandalizes temple statues A Saudi Arabian man has been arrested for vandalizing Buddhist statues at a temple in downtown Tokyo.
Police say they received an emergency call about a foreigner behaved violently at the Sensoji Temple in Asakusa, Taito Ward at around midnight on Wednesday.
They say officers who rushed to the scene found 4 Buddhist statues lying broken on the ground.
Police say they questioned a 31-year-old Saudi Arabian graduate school student nearby, and the man admitted that he had destroyed the statues.
The vandalism involved 3 stone statues measuring 60 to 100 centimeters tall and a 200-centimeter tall bronze one that was made about 300 years ago.
It has been designated as the ward's significant cultural property.
Police say the man told them that he has conducted similar vandalism at another temple.

I doubt anything is going to happen to him since his name is "モハマド・アブドゥラ・サード" which could be read 'Mohammad Abdullah SAUD [or Mohammad Abdullah (the) Third]. If his family name is "Saud" that might mean he is part of Saudi royal clan.:???:

That thought did cross my mind but it seems that the Al Saud family is usually transliterated as サウード.

Yeap, The royal family name Saud is written サウード but his name is サード which could be Saad. However, news reports, Japanese and Western, ALWAYS spell names in arabic wrong.

Since he was arrested a midnight, I think alcohol might have been a factor. Also, he was a grad student at Keio University so there is no telling how stressed out he was.

I think the dude should receive the exact punishment he would receive in Saudi for the desecration of a mosque.

Saudi destroys Buddha statues in Japan and gets arrested: Japan news
ANN news television network in Japan reported on Wednesday that a Saudi man destroyed three 300 years' old Buddha statues in Senso-Ji temple in Tokyo.

Senso-Ji templeis a Buddhist temple located in Asakusa, Taito, and Tokyo. And the temple is considered Tokyo's oldest temple, and one of its most significant.

The Saudi citizen, who was arrested by Tokyo Police department, is currently being investigated for reasons behind his action.

The incident caught the attention of moderate Muslims, and therefore a hash tag was trending on twitter #saudi-destroyed-statues-in-Japan, Saudis condemned the actions of the Saudi citizen, saying he should respect other's beliefs and religions.

Guess the police have a few more days to talk it over with him...

We are only getting the reports through the filter of what the police want to release to the media.

As happens so often in these reports, I find it hard to reconcile

Ah, those Saudi students.

The Saudi state pays the university abroad handsomely to take care of its students, and when the student "graduates" (=bought his/her degree) and returns home, he/she receives some handsome rewards, such as a Ferrari or its monetary equivalent.

The only thing the university has to keep in mind is to first receive the payments before accepting/graduating the student, because Saudi promises mean nothing, even if there is a contract...

You crack a religious artifact, in a way you destroy it by damaging its sanctity.

The guy could have been drunk, or he could have been having severe culture shock. Either way he is a total fucking dick, one of the things I love about Japan is the way you can have temples, shrines and roadside shrines which people do not vandalize.

Next question: what makes a religion a religion? Is the Happy Science movement a religion? If so, why? If not, why not? How about the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster? The Sannyasins of Bhagwan Shree Ragneesh? Jedi?

This is irrelevant.

Religion is playing up here, not on the Japanese side, but on the Saudi side. This guy destroyed these statues because of his own religious feelings. Let him pay the damage.

Usually a bit of time to turn from a cult.

I'm not a religious person myself, but I am glad I sent my kids to a tera-yochien, my son demonstrating his zazen pose is so endearing.

What a load of bullshit. Deities, saints, prayer, clergy, temples, and an afterlife all add up to a religion.

I agree, and don't forget money collection. It definitely passes the religion sniff test.

I hear this "only a philosophy" thing a lot when it comes to the big B. Sorry, if you think it's not a religion, you're getting a false positive on your satori.

Buddhism, in its most elemental form, is definitely more philosophy than religion.

There are no deities, although I suppose it's fair to consider Gautama Buddha and other early teachers "saints,"in the "good person" sense of the word. Unfortunately people invariably pollute and populate such philosophies with gods and ideas they've dreamed up to make some of the concepts more palatable to, or maybe force them upon, the unwashed masses. Often for personal gain or with the intent of using the philosophy/religion as a means to power. People fuck everything up.

Even concepts like an afterlife can be interpreted with a realist-Buddhist philosophical bent: i.e. you decompose and become the building blocks for new life, which is true. It's just not a very attractive way of looking at it. People prefer the pretty, painless stuff, which is why it is so easy for unscrupulous "religious leaders" to feed it to them.

There are Christians who claim real Christianity is not a religion. That doesn't make it true though. The fact is that even at its "most elemental" Buddhism at the very least includes the concept of divine (or call it cosmic if you prefer) punishment and reward. That makes it a religion. That doesn't mean the people running temples in Japan actually believe that bullshit though. After all it is first and foremost a family business here.
