Is it just me or is this whole "Japanese cars last longer becasue they are made better" thing bullsh*t! I think I can remember my American Made muscle car could take ALOT more punishment than the rice-burner I drive here in Okinawa.

Even if you did drive a muscle car mucsle cars are custom made so the owner will know what they are going to go to. If it was a general lee kind of car then it can be taken of road :else: its for street racing which you would never take it off road.

American cars are built for the american market i.e. to much steel, extra power needed to move said steel, with a little ego thrown in for free. Although one of my fave cars of all time is the limited edition 1979 stingray just before they started limiting engin emitions on american engines.(fords GT 40 is so fucking hot too)

Dont mock Japanese cars, how ever they are made they are killing the 'all american' car market. the are one of the biggest motor producers in america and the own a significant amount of the american domestic market and labor.

Also Japanese make some of the most shit hot street racing cars. the Skyline is a perfect example. I cant wait until people start customizing the Fairlady.

Where else in JPN can you get a rusted out jalopy for under $500? IMO, I think the salty air in okinawa rusts out the car a lot earlier. Can anyone tell me why most of the cars in Okinawa are white? (or at least it seems that way...)

Because it's too hot for any dark color. The climate in Okinawa is very different from the mainland.

Actually, until the early 90s most cars in Japan were white. A white "family" cars is still the most common color (30% of all family cars sold if I remember correctly).

I honestly have found that today's cars are about the same in terms of reliability.. Toyota, Ford, Honda, Chevy, Nissan, etc... They all give about 100,000 before major troubles.

One thing about living in Japan I have noticed, is that cars are crap, because most Japanese trade the car in after 5 years, because of the infamous shakken..

In the 80s, Japanese cars dominated the automotive scene.. all the way up to the 90s.. but lately, I think all cars are ranked about the same.

I will say this, Japanese cars retain their value longer than "domestic" vehicles like Ford and Chevy. Reason is we believe J-cars are more reliable. I think a lot of it depends on the driver, the car type, engine type, driving environment, maintenance routines and so on.
