Fuck you Toshiba!!

Postby matsuki » Tue Aug 05, 2014 10:53 pm

My 120GB TOSHIBA THNSNS120GBSP (SSD) took a shit yesterday. No warning signs or anything, just up and died. Not exactly my idea of quality when it only lasts 15 months. Apparently it only has a 1 year warranty and it's been just slightly over a year so fucked there. Nothing but OS on it so other than the hassle of re-installing/registering win8, I'm not losing much besides some time and replacement money but still, FUCK YOU TOSHIBA!

Anyhow, as Take would say, time to throw in with the land of kimchee. Replacement Samsung drive is on it's way.

Try to update the firmware of the drive...

You'd be amazed by what the bugs in the SMART error control can do to a perfectly fine drive...

Would if I could but the drive isn't even giving me much access...

Oddly enough, Yampa seems to have experienced the same shit with the same model and like his, mine was directly beneath another HD.....

Yup, it crapped out completely and I gave up on it... Until I decided to set up a server for testing stuff and gave it a whirl... it worked fine... until a few days ago when it got very hot then it conked out with exactly the same issue... so I moved it out of the disk mount where it was sandwiched between two hot-running HDs and put it on the floor of the case... been running fine since then.

So yeah, I guess that particular device doesn't like it hot.

IPU got it to where it's visible on his PC but can't access shit on it. We got it to show up in the BIOS on my PC the next day but no access there either.

It gets up to 32 in my room and I leave my PC on 24/7 so I concur, like a salaryman who can't take the heat, it simply suicides.

I ordered the 840EVO after seeing everyone raving about it. (and how cheap it is available for)

Yeah, the on-disk structure was kaput, I had to reformat it but it seems to work fine with the OS reinstalled. On my main PC I had the previous OS version still on a hard disk partition, so it was annoying but not a disaster. I still wouldn't keep critical data on one unless it was in a RAID configuration.

If it's any consolation, I just spent a couple of days stress-testing an industrial-scale SSD setup for a $big_us_company and managed to reproducibly break it

I tried reinstalling/formatting it with the win8 install on USB but it just wouldn't even find the drive. Well...maybe IPU can use it if we can zombie it. It gets far less hot in his room and he's already got OS splits and shit on his PC.

If i did use it it would only be for gaming... I think we should try doing what wabbit man said to do. There was an option to reinstall the firmware. since you already ordered a new one we can try playing with it.

Guys, i'm talking of the HD firmware, not the motherboard bios. Usually the update has to be done from a fully working windows desktop environment...

Yeah, but unfortunately we can't access it that way  It either doesn't show or when it does, no access.

The kuroneko fairy brought the new Samsung SSD this morning....and lucky me, both that and my real HD are not being found in bios or by the win8 install so maybe the motherboard has also succumbed to the heat.
