Steven Seagal? Who's that?

Movies, TV, music, anime other random J-pop culture phenomenons. Also film/video production, technical discussion, cast and crew calls, etc.

Yeah, I outlasted Russell by 6 seconds. Basically a 35 minute brainfart by a martial arts dork, non? What is it with Martial Arts types? Is it the practice itself that makes them such fuckwitted dorks, or that fuckwitted dorks tend to gravitate to dorky shit like martial arts? With obvious apologies to the 12% that do it because it's a fun and very invigorating and healthy hobby.

BTW, whatever Seagal is in that photo above, it isn't overweight. It's grotesque, life threatening fatness. He looks like a mean cartoonist's caricature of himself.

Yeah, looks like he's really been hitting the sauce. :drunk:

Sort of a shame.

if you train in martial arts, go train with some MMA guys and really find out how much shit you can talk. I have seen black belt taekwondo guys get out struck by rookie kick boxers/muay thai, and some wrestlers get out matched to their competing art (freestyle vs jitz vs judo) in some open mat bouts.

aikido is just one of those arts.... where it can be deadly or dreadfully useless. I heard some aikido practitioners say that wrestling is for high school kids and akido is for mature practitioners... we always shot back with, "you got to be a kid before you can be a man. go duck walk the mat and then talk shit."

Joe Rogan was talking with Kron Gracie about how some Kung Fu practicioners boast their art over others and Kung Fu being no where in the skill range for MMA (despite Roy "Big Country" Nelson having Bruce Buffer announce him as a Kung Fu practitioner during the fight announcement...)

Silly talk... but that guy should't talk shit about Steven Seagal... he could fuck you up despite his current obese state.

In general I agree. Where Steveo has fallen short is in coasting as an actor, writer, director, producer, musician, lawman, politician, and as a likeable human being. Aw hell, I'm just jealous...

Yeah, I was too cursory there. It's the Silly Trash Talk that gets up my nose. They're all cool, athletic, and worthy pursuits if you have an interest and inclination, and I appreciate that interest and effort even more if you don't talk about it much. The problem isn't the activity, it's this geeky, catty and internecine BS that surrounds it. Thinking fetishised hobbies matter is a bad sign (that guy in the video can barely form coherent sentences, FFS). Again, most fighting arts people that talk about it like it matters seem drawn to it because they're dorks, so I am going with egg over chicken. Fortunately, there are probably more than 12% that are good eggs, do it for the right reasons, and don't drone on about it. To put it in a reverse light, how many non-soccer/futsal players really want to hear the intricate details of a pick up level non-competitive fun league game??? I don't, and I play it 3 times a week.

BTW, some shocking detail about ManonManAction there (isn't Joe Rogan the slightly dopey electrician from TV's Talk Radio??? I liked him). Is cage humping really so popular we're supposed to know the fighters' names? I don't mean that as an insult, but having 0 interest in it, it all sounds Martian to me. I have friends who also talk about it as though it's a normal sport, but I usually just wait politely until they get back onto a real topic. As you can tell, I am at best completely uninterested, but its rise I do find rather intriguing. It certainly suggests that the fear of a new Bread and Circuses epoch is not unwarranted.

Oh, and I would never talk shite to SS if only because I used to quite like him. I really enjoyed the first few movies. Much better than most Arnie/Stallone crap from that era. Aikido really does sound like a very healthy and enjoyable pastime. Might even try it once my soccer and ski legs give out.

Joe Rogan is a world class Taekwondo black belt, BJJ black belt, UFC commentator, podcaster, comedian, and epic pot head. He knows his fights, he can fight (and even gave GSP some pointers on his kicks), and he is funny as all hell.

I would't say MMA is cage humping... like 50% the time it is and 25% is just lay and pray. But ya I keep up with it daily and love the sport. A fuck of a lot better than American football, baseball, cricket, and the majority of Olympic sports (which are not really.... sports.... ice skating/dancing???? like polka dancing on Valium ... wtf)

Joe Rogan sure do sound like the man. I have always liked him.

BTW, I get the level of athleticism, dedication and sheer physical courage required for MMA, I just don't like it. I find it more brutal than boxing without the dance that can keep boxing interesting. Personal preference and all that. The cage humping or ManOnManAction joke is mostly just to PO macho, homophobic soccer hating Red Bull drinkers that drool as they drone on about it but get very pissy when the rather obvious homoerotic possibilities are pointed out. And by homoerotic, I definitely don't mean sissy, which is how they take it. Like I said, the sheer brutality of some of it is just not my jug of beer. Add in 2 muscly men in tiny pants bathed in sweat, mucous and blood, and you have lost me. But I am not suggesting an interest in it means anything beyond an interest in it. I just like to yank chains.

And a double Yes on the Olympic sports. This last round really evaporated any further interest I have in that travelling boondoggle. Some of those events defy absurdity, and this trend towards judged sports is painful.

Now we're talking!!!!!!!

I would actually like to see fights more heavily regulated or punished. It seems to me it has lost its older aspect as an organic part of a very rough game, and this more recent popular enthusiasm for public brutality I find disturbing. If you fight, you're gone and you get a game in the naughty box. Look at the Olympic hockey: no fights, great hockey.

Oh, and make the ice Olympic sized as well. What is the standard size of Japanese rinks?

Yeah, 5 min and game misconduct...no problem with fighting but once it's over, they should be outta there. I've taken a few cheap shots from assholes over here but never taken a major penalty thus far...one of these days I'm sure I'll get ejected though...my team has slowly started to turn to me to fuck up people when shit goes down. (maybe it's me taking on the whole bench last season that started it but I've been leveling fuckers since my first game here)

kurogane wrote:Oh, and make the ice Olympic sized as well. What is the standard size of Japanese rinks?

Not a fan of the really wide Olympic-sized rinks, they always seem to result in a lot more icing and cherry picking.

The rink I play at in Tokyo is NHL sized and pretty nice....no idea what some of the others have been though as many rinks here seem to make their boards out of what the local home center has on sale. Whole team was gifted free yellow stripes on all our jerseys at the Ikaho rink...wooden boards at an odd height with flimsy plastic shielding....WTF?

We all have our roles and talents in pick up teams and such, but the increase in fighting in "fun" men's leagues (and boy's leagues) is one of my concerns. I know shiite happens, but normal people getting in fights at their hobby league games???? :cry2: Once or twice every 5 years or so, sure, esp. with teams that have bad blood. More than that, it sounds to me like we need mass therapy sessions. There really is some seriously weird emotional spasticity going on amongst First World males that needs to be beaten over the head with pointed sticks.

Besides, a few good proper hits often throws them off their game more than a fight would.

I prefer the Olympic size rink because I like that flowing old Oilers/Red Wings style. Scrabbly, scrappy NJ Devils/Philly hockey bores me. I can drive 10 minutes to the local rink to watch that level of skill. I expect more from multimillionaires. BTW, I think the icing frequency is more because of the international icing rule, isn't it, allowing for that Wimpy Swedish factor where it would be accepted as a normal part of the game because they're really just blonde pussies that wear pink windbreakers out of personal preference.

Doth say the Canucks' fan

In that case, the Asia league or Super league here might interest you. More finesse than brutality (well, when I'm not on the ice) and I can guarantee you noone playing is a multimillionaire (unless you're counting in yen)

LOL, I forgot about the no-touch icing....we got that too though I prefer to slow my stride on the dumps and clobber guys in the corner...makes them less likely to want to go into the corner next time.

Yeah, not a huge fan of the no touch icing. I get the safety aspect, and have seen some horrible career enders from The Race to the corner, but the huge increase in number of icings really does kill the flow. Almost like they need a penalty or measure to reduce Wimpy Swedish Icing maneuvers. I can't imagine where they would even start with that.

BTW, I liked that line about "souvenir yellow stripes". It took me a second. It's hard to imagine Japanese rinks would be Olympic size, I suppose. Space premiums and all that. I went to a few Slap Shot level games in Sapporo many years ago, but to be honest, it was shitt. I can't remember why, but I do remember that. And I still haven't forgiven them for casting Taka-ko Kimura from SMAP as a breakout star hockey player for the Canucks in that effluent worthy drama back when. That really broke the camel's back.

What's next, Kusanagi as a UFC heavyweight contender a la Rocky!?!????????????????????????

The worst is the cringe-worthy shit he does before every game in the series...

What...the...fuck? Talk about retard level over compensation/drama for a culture that thinks people who show emotion in public have a terminal case of the cooties.

For those of you who didn't watch "PRIDE," he lines up in the middle of the arena before the game and does this over dramatic bullshit where he grabs the captain "C" on his jersey, closes his eyes, and lowers his head all dramatic-like....followed by all the girls in the stand doing the same

Steven Seagal: Vladimir Putin's Crimea actions very reasonable
Steven Seagal's new role seems to be defending President Vladimir Putin's actions in Crimea.

The hard-man film star, who is thought to be an acquaintance of Putin because of a shared love of martial arts, has expressed his support for Russia's actions in Crimea in a 2,000 word interview with state-run newspaper Rossiskaya Gazeta.

According to The Moscow Times, Mr Seagal, who is currently shooting a new film in Romania, said President Vladimir Putin's "desire to protect the Russian-speaking people of Crimea, his assets, and the Russian Black Sea military base in Sevastopol … is very reasonable."

In the interview Seagal reportedly says he considers Putin "one of the great living world leaders" and that he "would like to consider him as a brother." He also criticises what he describes as the "idiotic" US policy on Ukraine.

In an interview last year the star said of Vladimir Putin that: "I would like to think I know him well. But I know him well enough to know that he is one of the greatest world leaders, if not the greatest world leader alive."

Seagal is not the only action star to have waded in on the subject of Crimea.

Former governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger offered some less-than-helpful advice for world leaders when asked about Crimea in a recent interview to promote his new film 'Sabotage'.

“I think what they all need to do now, is stop whatever they are doing and watch the movie ‘Sabotage’”, he said...

Yep, was too lazy to post this story, or maybe it is I somehow agree with Seagal this time.

However, I would not call Putin's action reasonable, but they certainly are rational.

Actor Steven Seagal claims Liam Neeson 'can't fight like real action movie guys'
independent.ie / 03 June 2014
...
Seagal, best remembered for his roles in Under Siege and The Patriot, made a dig at Neeson saying, “Liam’s not an action movie guy at all.“
Seagal (62) said that while Neeson (61) is a great dramatic actor, he is not a great fighter or warrior.
The fading movie star said that new technologies in the movie industry have reduced the need for authentic action heroes like himself:
“People don’t have to be an action guy or a hero or a martial artist- they get up there and let everybody spend the money and the time with special effects.”...
...
Neeson...keeps fit and healthy with regular boxing sessions, having taken up the sport at the age of nine.
Neeson was once Ulster amateur boxing champion, and competed in almost 50 fights.

I'm confused. Is Seagal claiming Aikido is a legitimate combat system?

Is Seagal actually claiming Aikido is a legitimate combat system?

Oh, and does he remember the biggest action star of the 80's and early 90's? What where his fighting credentials?

Movie star Steven Seagal tells of briefs encounter when Scots fans threw knickers at him
--MARTIAL arts maestro is back on road with his blues band and set to play The Ferry in Glasgow next week.--
Daily Record / July 12, 2014
TOUGH guy movie star Steven Seagal says he’s ready to return to the venue where female Scots fans threw their knickers at him.
The Hollywood movie superstar is back on the road with his blues band and is lined up to play a gig at The Ferry in Glasgow.
Seagal, 62, last played the venue in 2007 and received a surprise underwear attack.
He said: “Panties were thrown on stage. That was OK. If the girls want to throw their panties, that’s fine. I’m honoured and grateful that the fine women of Glasgow would want to thrown their panties at me.
“As long as they’re not triple X porno panties or anything too exotic, I can handle it."

Steven Seagal dropped from Estonia music festival lineup after outcry

Steven Seagal created controversy last week in the Baltic nation of Estonia, but not for his cinematic efforts. The actor, better known for his Hollywood tough guy roles is also, it transpires, a blues singer and guitar player. But his attempts to bring his musical talent to Estonia has gone down badly in a country that has a fraught history with its eastern neighbour Russia, as Seagal has been vocal in his support of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, and his annexation of the Crimean peninsula.
