Old-style Google now available (for old-style browsers)

Ad giant: Yeah, we did that deliberately

Google is attempting to shunt users away from old browsers by intentionally serving up a stale version of the ad giant's search homepage to those holdouts.

Which is cool news, because this is about the UI, not the data, which is fresh. And as the newer Google UI versions are annoying the heck out of me (especially the maps function), as of now Opera 12 is my official Search Browser. I do hope the feature "return search results which contain a word Google deems to be vaguely similar to one of the words in the search but is actually different enough to render half the results irrelevant" has been toned down.

So all you need to do is spoof the referer to say IE3 or "Windows 3.11/Mosaic 1.0" to get the goodies? Must try :)

I always get the impression that a lot of scripts start running when I use a Google service.

There must be a reason why the fan in my laptop goes ballistic each time.

I'm pretty sure all the big websites got together last year and decided "yay, let's turn the Javascript all the way up to 11!!!!"

Maybe it has to do with the current sequel of the war "advertisers vs. ad-blockers".

Though looked at with the correct browser, Google still looks lovely:

Old-style Google News now available

Postby Russell » Mon Oct 16, 2017 8:00 am

Couple of months back Google had the brilliant idea to simplify their News layout to the extent that it is is not fit for laptop and desktop PCs.

But do not despair. There is hope...
