Hoping it weakens somewhat.

I think it's heartless that they would refer to it as a 'super' typhoon especially when one considers that it is scheduled to arrive in Japan on Sports Day and ruin all the 3 legged races and bean bag relays the kiddies have planned so I would have hoped they could have come up with a more fitting descriptive, such as Terrific, or even Heartbreaking and they really do need some new naming guidelines for these ivory tower weather types or Is this a new meme-ing trend amongst meteorologists??? Next thing you know they'll be making annoying videos with titles like Vanvong Style.

Well, no, frankly. Swell is a great word, even a Super word, but to me it still suggests the same sort of innapropriately positive or laudatory aspects that the problematic phrase Super Typhoon might. What I do think is that we should broaden this debate to include those purveyors of positive parlance such as habitual Oprah Winfrey watchers, and maybe even a few internet cat ladies so that we can come up with a suitably descriptive term that those of us with highly developed senses of presumptuous empathy (in the newer sense of sympathy and pity, of course) will find acceptable so that we won't have to flood internet comment boards with cries of Shame! Shame! while we sit at our keyboards in adult diapers waiting for the inevitable snarky reply.

That is what I think. If one were so inclined, one might call it My Theory.

Sincerely,
Anne Elk

The eye is just to the south, projected to pass over us this eve sometime. 12 injuries reported earlier this morn in Naha.

This typhoon is certainly slow moving, which prolongs the mah jongg tournaments for those stuck in it.

And it has more time to dump rain.

How much rain is there on Okinawa, Mike?

About 10-20 mm/hr since 08:00, and 20-30 mm/hr from 15:00.

Weird storm. 24 hours ago it took my laundry rod and threw it from the hooks to the veranda floor with a gust of wind (something I hadn't seen before with all the other typhoons), intensified off and on into this afternoon, and just dropped off the last couple hours.

Those look like some of the space photos Taro was posting earlier. We went from 13m waves in the first half of the cat 4/5 storm of the century, to the quickly downgraded languishing tropical storm that just won't go away and leave us be...

I love [*] the way English-language media (esp. the US-based ones) go all dramatic in a deep baritone "BREAKING NEWS - MEGASTORM RONGWON, THE WORST TYPHOON SINCE THE LAST WORST TYPHOON IS POISED TO BATTER THE COAST OF JAPAN, BRINGING WAVES WHICH COULD REACH 100 FEET AND WINDS OF 1000MPH AND DEATH TO MILLIONS AND TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF DEVASTATION IF THE ABSOLUTE FREAKY WORST HAPPENS, STAY TOONED FOR OUR ARMAGEDDON UPDATES FROM OUR TYPHOON TEAM", kind of way, whereas Japanese TV is "here's a guy in a raincoat getting wet, stay clear of coasts and rivers, and keep watch out for evacuation alerts".

[*] in the sense of "am annoyed by"

Fortunately, we have the NHK to give us objective unbiased news on a continuous base...

It's the helmets. Ever since the tsunami, Japanese reporter feel compelled to wear them as part of the disaster reporter uniform. Overseas media sees the helmets and figure the typhoon must be producing fly cows or some such.

Lots of rain being dumped, but not much wind.

Fucker doesn't move away.

Starting to take countermeasures against flooding.

Mie reporting. Getting fairly windy and wet here now. Not too severe but not weather to be out and about in for sure.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
