My, that was sizable! I wouldn't have wanted to try to stand up during that.

Even so, no sound of things falling or breaking, biggest damage was that I had to set the pendulum on the clock swinging again.

I was on the ice when some panic asshole announced to the whole arena that there had just been an earthquake...we didn't feel shit but one of the dudes there is from karuizawa so he went running for his cell phone (running in ice skates is far from graceful) Anyhow, no damage here or there.

Slept through that one. It registered shindo 1 Up here.

But I'm really surprised at the number of buildings that collapsed in that small area. Must have been some weird movement, or ancient/shitty construction. The "shindo" was lower that what we experienced up here on 3/11, but almost no structures collapsed from the earthquake itself. Quite a few roofs had to be repaired (ours included), but no total structural failures like this one caused. Probably a movement issue, the Nagano quake being a "direct hit" which might have caused more vertical motion than the mostly lateral motion of an offshore quake.

Yes, I think it is probably an epicenter issue. The shaking did feel vertical here.

Checking foreign news reports (mainly to see if I have to take action to ward off well-meaning but disruptive inquiries from friends and family) I see that the online version of a respectable paper has a photo from a Sichuan earthquake the same day. Hopefully that will be corrected, but I have no faith in the media any more. http://www.theage.com.au/world/strong-q ... 1s1dh.html

More surprised this kind of structure stayed up long enough to have the wood decay so much...
you see that it's not a classic structural failure where the walls fold and the roof part drop on top more or less cleanly.
Looks more like the whole building was falling to dust quake or not...

That one, yes. But there were quite a few more substantial looking buildings that collapsed too.

I felt it, very faintly, and said to my wife, "that's a big one a long way away" but didn't get round to checking until I saw the news this morning.

Many of those photos are of the community hall, which is of course the place where you are meant to gather initially after a natural disaster like, say, an earthquake, before moving on as a group to the official centres...

So now they'll rebuild with something insanely overpriced just to have a "earthquake resistant" stamp on it.

That is no joke. The community I am in is in a constant loop where the same old guy brings up the issue of the quake rating of the building, and the governing body starts to take steps to think about initiating a preliminary inquiry into conducting a review... until its term expires, momentum is lost, and we wait for the old guy to pipe up again.

Don't feel too bad about it: a lot of the money will come from general tax revenue, so you would all be paying for a lot of it.

At first I thought it was just the aftershock from the big bowl of ramen I ate, but actually there was a shindo 3 in Ibaraki-ken 2 minutes ago.

The one in the morning was not felt by myself or persons known to me. The one earlier shook the water in the bath a bit, and was promptly forgotten.

This one woke me up and i heard junk rattling on my nighstand (workbench combo... Don't ask...)

It's the 2nd or 3rd time that I feel a really weak quake happening up there while being in mah bunk in the big T...

Anyone else in Tokyo feel that nice jolt this morning? They say it was only shindo 1 in parts of Tokyo and my Ku isn't even listed but it kicked hard enough to wake me up and make me consider whether or not I should take cover for a second or two.

This one? It was enough for me to toddle downstairs and check the TV to confirm my guess as to approximate location and magnitude.

Must have been though the list there says it was shindo 3 in my area. I guess the Smartphone version of Yahoo Japan which is what I checked earlier doesn't match the desktop version. Or maybe the list has been updated in last 30 mins.

Also woke me up and the dog next door (who usually serves as a pretty sensitive earthquake alert). Wife and kids snored through it and wouldn't get up, so glad it was a pre-quake for something bigger.
