Hakuho Ties Chiyonofuji's Record

Postby Hijinx » Sun Sep 28, 2014 6:19 pm

Sumo history is being made. One more to tie the all-time.

The Japan NewsYokozuna Hakuho ensured his name will be difficult to forget. No. 10 maegashira Ichinojo had a makuuchi-division debut to remember at the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament.

Hakuho (14-1) threw down fellow yokozuna Kakuryu (11-4) to tie Chiyo-nofuji with his 31st tournament title, his third in a row. He is now just one tournament victory behind the all-time leader Taiho.

Hakuho ties legend Taiho with 32nd Emperor's Cup
Mongolian grand champion Hakuho beat compatriot Kakuryu at the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament on Sunday to win his 32nd Emperor’s Cup, tying him for the all-time lead with sumo legend Taiho.

Hakuho calmly dispatched Kakuryu in the day’s final bout to finish the tournament with 14-1 record. Kakuryu finished with a 12-3 record.

The 29-year-old native of Ulan Bator could take the all-time championship lead if he claims the trophy at the New Year tournament in January.

Taiho won 32 titles between 1956 and 1971 and was regarded as the greatest sumo wrestler of the post-war era. He died last year at the age of 72.

Hakuho made his debut in 2001 and won his first Emperor’s Cup in 2006. He was promoted to sumo’s highest rank of yokozuna in 2007.

The cool thing is I think this guy did it way faster than either of the two other 30+ winners. 8-)
