A North Korean believed to be a runaway soldier killed four Chinese citizens during a robbery after he crossed the border into China in search of food, media reports said Monday.

Dong-A said the victims were two elderly ethnic Korean couples. Koreans make up for about 30 percent of the population in China's Yanbian Korean autonomous prefecture that borders the North.
"It has become pretty common for the past decade that North Koren soldiers sneak across the border at night to seek food here," Dong-A quoted one resident of the area as saying.

A photo taken from space and showing a pitch black North Korea next to a brightly lit South Korea is one of the most famous images of the country. And the country’s ruling regime has responded to the picture, hitting out at critics of the state.
An editorial in the state-run newspaper, the Rodong Sinmun, claims that the country is not weakened by its lack of electricity and that other countries could soon find themselves in the same situation.
"They [North Korea’s detractors] clap their hands and get loud over a satellite picture of our city with not much light, but the essence of society is not on flashy lights," the editorial says, according to the Wall Street Journal’s translation.
The piece said that given troubles in the US — such as high debt levels and civil disturbances like Occupy Wall Street and protests in Ferguson — it was likely that the country would see the same problems soon.
"An old superpower that is meeting its sunset may put up a face of arrogance but it can’t avoid its dark fate," the editorial says.

North Korean defectors are often baffled by all the English-based words they hear in South Korea, like "shampoo," ''juice" and "self-service" — none of which is used in the reclusive North.
South Koreans, meanwhile, are puzzled by homegrown North Korean words like "salgyeolmul," which literally means "skin water." (That's "skin lotion" south of the border.)
The two countries share a language, but the Korean Peninsula's seven-decade split has created a widening linguistic divide that can result in misunderstandings, hurt feelings and sometimes laughter. The gap has grown so wide that scholars say about a third of everyday words used in the two countries are different.

North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un has ordered a new “pleasure troupe” of young women to entertain him.
Kim, 32, whose country is notorious for its allegedly widespread and horrific human rights abuses, is reportedly drawing up lists of a new generation of female companions, The Daily Telegraph reports.
Despite being married to a former singer with whom he has a baby daughter, the dictator is drawing on a tradition established by his father – Kim Jong-iI – that saw government officials scour the countryside and select girls for the leader.
The previous “pleasure troupe” was disbanded on the death of the old dictator in December 2011, but with the official three-year mourning period now over, Kim is free to start his own.
The “pleasure troupes” were a practise introduced by Kim’s grandfather, North Korea’s founding father, the ‘Eternal President’ Kim Il-sung.
Government officials would conduct searches of the countryside for the most attractive young women, typically taking 30 to 40 every year, who would become maids, singers, or dancers following an interview with the leader.
The prettiest would be expected to become the leader’s concubines, eventually passed on – or “retired” – to high ranking military or government officials after they reached their mid-20s.
"This has been going on under three generations of the Kim family ruling North Korea and it has become a tradition that is also a demonstration of the leader's power over the people and his sexual power," Toshimitsu Shigemura, a professor at Tokyo's Waseda University, told The Daily Telegraph.
It is thought that the previous “pleasure troupe” were paid-off following Kim Jong-il’s death. South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo claimed the women were given approximately $4,000 (a huge sum in North Korea) and various household appliances.

It's usually top generals or potential rivals who feel the wrath of North Korea's leader, but this week Kim Jong Un's ire was directed at a terrapin farm.
According to North Korea's state-run KCNA news agency, the country's Supreme Leader recently carried out an inspection of the Taedonggang Terrapin Farm where he noted a number of "serious shortcomings."
For one thing the farm, which is located on the outskirts of Pyongyang, didn't pay enough attention to the study of his late father, who KCNA said was the inspiration behind the project to "provide the people with tasty and nutritious terrapin widely known as a precious tonic from olden times."
"It is hard to understand that the farm visited by Kim Jong Il did not arrange even the room for education in revolutionary history," KCNA quoted Kim as saying. "The employees who failed to bear deep in their minds his leadership exploits could hardly perform their role as masters in production."
He then added, ominously, that the farm's atmosphere was completely different from others he visited.
The farm was also meant to breed freshwater lobsters. But, because of the "incompetence, outmoded way of thinking and irresponsible work style" of its managers, it failed to do so, Kim said, according to KCNA.
