Japanese company info

Postby Cyka UchuuJin » Wed Apr 29, 2015 2:52 pm

How does one go about finding out annual turnover of a Japanese company? Not looking for any devious reason, I'm doing some market research on our competitors and need to put them onto a scale. One of them is a Japanese company in Hiroshima called Maruni and I need to find out what their global annual turnover is. It's easy to do in Legoland, all that info is public and on a site.

Is there similar here?

Are they public or privately held? Listed companies should have that information available on their website. Private companies don't have to make that info public as far as I know. If you're doing market research, a good place to start is JETRO: http://www.jetro.go.jp/en/jetro/profile/map.html

If it is a public limited company and quoted on the stock exchange then any number of stock trading/information websites will have that data as will, most likely, the corporate website.

If it is a private limited company then they may well have to file accounts which might be accessed via registration and a fee here:

Sorry, I can't read enough to be sure of that though.

If it is not a registered, limited company then I don't suppose you can get any information any more than I can find out how much you earn.

I'm quite sure it's privately held. Very old furniture manufacturer.

I have seen that some companies list that kind of info on their websites, but this one doesn't. I know the guy who is their export sales manager, and he'd probably tell me if I asked, but that's a bit rude I think.

I'll have a look through JETRO and see what comes up.

In the US a company in which the stocks are not traded publicly (aka a private company) doesn't have to file financial reports. In Europe, they do and the information is publicly available for a fee. I'm not sure about Japan but this would seem to indicate it follows the European model:

All stock companies (kabushiki-kaisha) are regulated under the Companies Act, and are required to
provide a business report and the following financial statements (Article 435(2) of the Companies Act):
- Balance sheet;
- Income statement;
- Statement of changes in net assets:
- Notes to non-consolidated financial statements; and
- Supplementary schedules
In addition, large companies whose financial statements are filed with the FSA should prepare
consolidated financial statements.
The main objectives of the accounting and disclosure system under the Companies Act are:
(a) To protect creditors and current shareholders;
(b) To compute the distributable earnings of the company; and
(c) To evaluate management's performance of its stewardship function.

https://www.hp.jicpa.or.jp/english/about/publications/pdf/PUBLICATION-Overview2010.pdf

If it is not a kabushiki-kaisha then the only way will be to elicit a voluntary disclosure.

It actually turned out to be a lot easier than I thought. I googled 'Maruni annual sales' and it came right up.

Just to add to that, their cafeteria in Yoshida in Kyoto is good and cheap. Nice Hirekatsu, and their own very yummy special sauce. I never really thought about it but their furniture really is quite old..............
