That is correct. The southern rift valley where i am has no al shabab threat. and it is also correct that there are some countryside areas where some violent acts are not internationally reported (often things like domestic violence or land disputes), but i live in an area where literally i could go walking in the bush in the middle of the night and have zero fear of anyone harming me.


edit: basically what i am saying is that of all the places i'm currently living/visiting, the only one that i'd actually feel 100% stress free is where i live in kenya. no earthquakes, homocidal religious maniacs, suicidal salarymen or pilots, radical politics, et etc.
we also have no electricity out there, and not much of an internet/mobile signal, and i have to go 25km away to buy basics like flour and cooking oil, which is a deal breaker for 99% of people, but i'm happy to say i'm in the 1% in that matter.

NHK news said the self-immolation took place around the second row of seats in the cabin of the leading car, and the female victim was thought to have been close by and died of smoke inhalation (but made it as far as the vestibule next to the 2nd car.

I'm pretty sure that materials used in Shinkansen interiors are not at the same fireproofing standards as in airplane and when it start to burns some nasty shit gets in the smoke...

Two passengers, one male and one female, died Tuesday in an apparent self-immolation aboard a speeding bullet train south of Tokyo.
The man, aged 71 and a resident of Suginami Ward, Tokyo, was near the entrance doors at the front of the Nozomi 225′s lead car when he poured a flammable liquid from a white plastic tank over his head and set it alight, police said.
The man’s corpse was badly charred, the police said, adding they were trying to confirm other circumstances around the incident.

If it had been a family/friend on board, I'd probably feel the same...though how does a jiji carry kerosene in a tank onto the shinkansen without the people around him noticing something is a bit off?

Kerosene is hard to ignite, i'd bet more on lighter fluid, excellent fire starter readily available, small bottle/can enough to make a good mess. We have dozens at home... For reason that I ignore since nobody smoke and we never used them...

Woman killed in bullet train fire suicide was on peace pilgrimage

A woman killed when a man deliberately set himself on fire aboard a moving bullet train was on her way to a shrine to give thanks for her “peaceful life,” it was learned Wednesday.

Yoshiko Kuwahara, 52, died after 71-year-old Haruo Hayashizaki doused himself in fuel and sparked the blaze on the train.

“Today I’m visiting Ise shrine to give thanks for my calm, peaceful life,” Kuwahara wrote on her Facebook page on Tuesday morning as she boarded the super-fast Nozomi bullet train at Yokohama.

Ise shrine is one of the most sacred spots in Japan’s native Shintoism, and a major tourist draw.

The train, packed with more than 800 passengers, was traveling from Tokyo to the commercial hub of Osaka when witnesses reported a blast in the front of the first carriage.

Plumes of choking, white smoke sent passengers fleeing down the train as it screeched to an emergency stop.

Reports said the driver rushed back into the smoke-filled carriage and tried to douse Hayashizaki’s still-burning body.

Footage from inside the train shot immediately after it stopped showed smut-stained passengers blinking and coughing as they crawled through thick smoke to the exits, some clutching small children.

As well as the two deaths, 26 people were hurt in the incident, authorities said.

Police on Wednesday raided the dead man’s Tokyo home on the hunt for clues about his motive.

The Sponichi tabloid reported Hayashizaki, who lived alone, had complained to neighbors he “could not live properly because his pension was small”.

But the reason for choosing such a public suicide—one that could have had disastrous consequences for those on board the bullet train—remained a mystery.

A neighbor said she saw Hayashizaki with a plastic tank on Monday and he told her he was going to buy some oil.

Hayashizaki’s dramatic suicide has shocked Japan, where acts of public violence are extremely rare, and has led to calls for stepped up security on the vast bullet train network.

Many members of the public were reacting with overwhelming sympathy for Kuwahara, an innocent bystander caught up in someone else’s violence.

On her profile, Kuwahara, a chiropractor, said her dream was “to become a person who treats people’s minds and bodies”.

“I’d like offer my heartfelt prayers. Why did you have to get wrapped up in this? It’s terrible,” one of 2,500 messages left on her Facebook page said.

“I’m really sorry you were involved in an incident caused by a selfish person. I hope there will be no such painful event in the future,” another wrote.

Why is it that what is so very obvious is always never even suggested until it is proven to be the case?
