Light Aircraft Crash In Residential Chofu

Postby Yokohammer » Sun Jul 26, 2015 11:57 am

Just on the tube, with no other sources as yet.

Around 11:00 AM a light aircraft originating from Chofu airport crashed in a residential area, thus far burning three houses and two cars. Obviously a few deaths are involved.

Heard it happen, daughter had just gone upstairs to hang something on the veranda and the wife and I wondered what she was doing to make such a racket.

About an hour later the neighbour told us a plane had come down, hadn't really registered the sound of the helicopters, living close to the airport you kind of blank aircraft noise out.

Pretty nasty for all concerned, expect there will be talk of shutting down the airport now.

Generic Piper PA 46 (before)

And after...
image.jpg

Gross weight 1852kg... Less than mah car... Not sure the bunker would have suffered much from a collision with this... Depend of the speed at impact... But still aside from the front engine, just plenty of thin aluminum, and plenty of jetfuel (if it was the turboprop version)

And I was told only V22 osprey could crash and murder japanese baybees...

I'd say very nasty for the people in the houses that got hit.

Such an unusual occurrence though. Very occasionally a chopper will land upside down in someone's yard, but I can't even remember the last time i heard of a light plane ploughing into a residential area.

Three people confirmed dead so far, by the way. One a woman who was on the 2nd floor of the house.

Jeez ... talk about having a bad day.

Just wait for reports of another aircraft hitting the north tower...
Then we'll know it's going to be a funky ride...

Funny you should mention that, there's a fire on the roof of the "Asakusa View Hotel" right now.

Still not many details, but the media are on it.

Small plane crashes into homes in Tokyo suburbs, kills 3

(Breaking all rules of "fair use," the entire article is quoted. Photo at link.)

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- A small private aircraft crashed into homes in Chofu in the suburbs of Tokyo on Sunday morning, killing three people and injuring five others, police said.

The crash, involving a single-engine propeller aircraft with five people aboard, occurred around 11 a.m. and set five houses and two cars on fire, according to the Tokyo Fire Department.

Two men pulled out of the wreckage and a woman rescued from a house hit by the plane died, while three other men aboard the plane and two other women on the ground were injured and taken to hospital, the police said.
Footage on public broadcaster NHK and images showed a gutted house, the tail section of a light aircraft turned almost upside down, and firefighters battling fires and trying to rescue people.

The area is located just southeast of Chofu airport which, with an 800-meter runway, is mainly served by small propeller aircraft. The Piper PA-46, owned by an individual, was on a training flight from the airport to Izu Oshima Island roughly 100 kilometers to the south, according to the transport ministry and the police.

"I saw the plane take off but didn't see it crash," a woman who lives in the neighborhood said. "Immediately, though, I heard a loud boom and saw smoke rising."

Three occupants of the aircraft are still alive, so we might get more details about what caused the crash.

It's that Brit tendency to understatement.

I have wondered if a plane would come down sooner or later, Chofu has a few regular scheduled flights, probably run at a loss but vital to some of the islands. Then there are companies that do aerial photography. Also there are some private planes, all light aircraft. The runway is too short for jets, but we do get the occasional helicopter.

The run in one way goes over Nogawa park, which is why we can't fly kites there, the other way it is right over the suburbs, this plane came down on the suburbs.

The airport has a long history, it was originally built by the Japanese airforce, who turfed out a few farmers and villagers, for use during the war. In the park there are still a couple of concrete hangers for fighter planes, shut off as unsafe because all the iron beams were stripped out and sold by scavengers post war.

It was taken over by the Americans after the war, who turned half of it into a gold course, now Nogawa Park, then turned it to civilian use a few years later.

My house is next to a bridge over Nogawa River which used to be where they brought the planes down to the airfield from the factory up the hill.

And yes, very nasty for the people killed, we can only hope it was over before they knew what was happening.

Think you'll find taking the pilot's license more expensive than buying the plane. Without a navigator's license I think you are stuck with taking off and landing at the same airport.

Not sure about the cost of a used plane but a friend of mine recently looked into getting a pilot's license here and if I remember correctly it's about 3 million yen.

Bin Laden does it again

Postby Russell » Sat Aug 01, 2015 7:23 am

Private jet owned by Bin Laden family crashes into a car auction near Hampshire airport killing three passengers and pilot after overshooting the runway as it tried to land

Four people have been killed when a private jet owned by Osama Bin Laden’s family crashed in a fireball after overshooting a runway while trying to land outside London.

The £7million Embraer Phenom 300 was owned by Salem Aviation in Jeddah, which is controlled by the dead terrorist’s family.

The Brazilian-built aircraft exploded after ploughing into a carpark killing the pilot and three passengers - believed to be members of the Bin Laden family.

The jet was completely destroyed after it overshot the runway while trying to land at the Blackbushe Airport on the Hampshire-Surrey border.

Emergency services raced to the scene shortly after 3pm when the aircraft crashed into an overflow car park attached to the British Car Auction.

Last night, police were investigating reports that members of the Bin laden family were on the crashed jet. The plane is believed to be registered to a Saudi company owned by the family.

Although based in Saudi Arabia, the plane was flying into Hampshire from Milan. The Bin Ladens have interests in northern Italy.

It appears the most likely reason the plane crashed in Chofu was two many passengers weighing over 65 kilos and a full tank of gas

They should put scales in the seats, so the plane beeps like an elevator when the portly person sits down,

Actually, they should have scales that the whole plane, fully loaded, would roll across before takeoff. Or better yet, have built in scales - maybe driven by landing gear compression....

Those charts come from the plane maker...

Just thinking, but 65 kg is not a lot.

Does this plane also fly in the US?

How do they deal with the weight limit there? Loading less passengers?
