who uses outlook?

Postby no hit » Sat Dec 13, 2003 4:34 am

hey all... i'd never used outlook until i got 2003 (in english), but probably this applies to previous versions...

i want to input contact names in japanese. i use the global ime regularly to switch between E and J, and can input in japanese to most areas of various office programs, and can use it in outlook for email, journal, notes, etc... but not for contact names or addresses.

is it impossible to do this on an english version?

couldnt find any help on microsoft

thanks!

Outlook 2003 does not allow Japanese characters in contact names and addreses. It also does not display Japanese characters in the From field on received email.

Outlook DOES do this,
at least in the Macintosh Version it does. It did it back in 2000, so, I'm sure it does it now.

Also I think you HAVE to have the fonts on your computer.

If Outlook doesn't work then use Microsoft Entourage.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

Well I'm assuming he's talking about the Windows version here.

*Actually* there is a way to do it but it's sorta funky.

Setup Regional Options > Set Default > Japanese as the language for the menus and dialogs.

This solves the Outlook problem however lots of other stuff like display fonts and internet fonts all go out of whack. I tried it and it was frustrating.

That's really interesting.

Just to absolutely sure. You mean that under Windows (XP I suppose) using Outlook 2002 you can see Japanese characters in the from field not just a series of ????.

I know that Outlook has *no problem* with Japanese text entry etc but AFAIK this *from field* problem is a known 'anomaly'

Might be onto something here.

I always have set my regional settings up exactly as Steve says here, and Outlook works fine as does Outlook express..

But this key | makes the yen symbol instead of the backslash, and menus when installing programs are often in Japanese....

I have gotten used to it so I have no problems with it.. but it takes a while to adapt.

also i will look more into Atok.. didn't know anything about it but after a quick search it seems like it may be more useful than MS ime.
