Most aircraft are taking a more southerly route at the moment, probably something to do this the jet stream/current prevailing winds. It's not that odd and I flown it before doing a similar route.

Nice to know that Delta's PR dept has not much of a fucking clue on basic aerodynamics (ok, more that using the word 'affect' is a bit too much against the rule of the "people who think that words should have a meaning" club). JAL plane makes emergency landing after mid-air engine shutdown

A Japan Airlines jetliner with 228 passengers was forced to turn around for an emergency landing in Tokyo on Wednesday after the aircraft’s right engine shut down during a flight to Hokkaido, an airline spokesman said.

The Boeing 777, powered by Pratt & Whitney engines, landed safely at Tokyo’s Haneda airport, the spokesman said, with no injuries reported. The cause of the engine shutdown was as yet unknown, he added.

The only thing you should be worried about when an engine fails is whether they will get you one more beer. And maybe get annoyed that your journey will take a little bit longer.

Engine failures are complete and utter non-events, and landing a modern jet N-1 is a walk in the park.

Update:

A JAL Japan Airlines Boeing 777-200, registration JA008D performing flight JL-521 from Tokyo Haneda to Sapporo (Japan) with 228 passengers and 11 crew, was climbing through about FL300 out of Tokyo's Haneda Airport when the right hand engine (PW4077) emitted a loud bang prompting the crew to stop the climb about 140nm north of Haneda Airport and return to Haneda Airport for a safe landing on runway 34R about 50 minutes after departure.

Japanese media report that debris off the right hand engine were found near Yonezawa about 140nm north of Haneda Airport.

Asiana plane hits antenna in Japan runway undershoot

An Asiana Airways plane smashed into a communications antenna as it came in to land at a Japanese airport, footage showed Wednesday, injuring 27 people in an accident redolent of the airline's fatal 2013 crash in San Francisco.

Aerial footage from Hiroshima airport in western Japan showed the localiser -- a large gate-like structure, six metres (18 feet) high that sits some distance from the start of the runway -- splintered, with debris spread towards the landing strip.

An ILS is no longer a requirement for precision approaches these days... aircraft and the infrastructure are capable of performing precision approaches down to CAT-II weather without any ground-based navigation aids other than lights. The only thing stopping airlines from using this capability is red tape and the added cost to train crews to use this capability.

Knowing Asiana though, it's unlikely the crew knew how to properly use their equipment to the fullest of its capabilities in the absence of a ILS to tune. What a pity.

Boeing 787 software problem could lead planes to fall out of the sky if they’re left turned on for too long

Boeing’s huge 787 Dreamliner could see its engines shut down if it is left running for too long, because of a software glitch.

If the plane is left turned on for 248 days, it will go into a failsafe mode that will lead to the plane losing all of its power, according to a new directive from the US Federal Aviation Administration. If the bug is triggered, the generator control units (GCUs) will shut off, leaving the plane without power and loss of control of the plane.

Reminds me of a return landing at Narita some years ago - chuted, smoked, and foamed. Then left waiting in the grass and rain for over an hour because the bus drivers had already left for home. Once back in the terminal the crew was first out, and the passengers were left for another two hours or so before being bussed to hotels. I do hope the Las Vegas passengers fared better.
