Back in the house b*tch! (J-Wify wants it that way)

Postby IparryU » Thu Sep 26, 2013 10:53 am

1 in 3 Japanese women want to be housewives: poll

One in three young Japanese women wants to get married and be a full-time housewife, a government survey has showed, despite growing calls for increased female participation in the workforce.

The poll, which quizzed more than 3,000 people aged 15-39, found 34% of unmarried women did not want to work when they settled down.

The survey, by the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry, found that only a slightly higher proportion of women actively did not want to become dedicated home-makers (38%), while the rest had no firm opinion either way.

However, potential husbands were on the whole less keen on the idea, with only one in five saying they wanted a future wife to stay at home all day.

Despite high levels of education, many women in Japan drop out of the workforce when they have children, and social pressures to play the homemaker remain strong.

Experts at home and abroad, notably IMF director Christine Lagarde, have argued that women could rescue Japan’s chronically underperforming economy if more of them went to work.

The nation’s male-dominated, shrinking labor market is being hit by retiring baby boomers and a falling birthrate, which is putting extra pressure on the nation’s finances as it tries to fund a growing pension pot from a shrinking pool of workers.

As part of an overhaul aimed at getting the economy moving again, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has pledged to expand business opportunities for women.

Earlier this week, his foreign minister told a United Nations forum that by 2020, 30% of senior government positions would be held by women. At present only two of the 19 members of the cabinet are women.

The survey, conducted on the Internet in late March and released this week, found younger women tended not to be looking for potential husbands who can bring home a huge pay check.

More than 40% said they wanted a moderate, but stable lifestyle, and would be happy with a household take-home of 200,000-300,000 yen a month to live off after marriage.

There was no breakdown in the poll detailing how many respondents did not want to get married in the first place.

LOL, Abe saying one thing, the stats saying the exact opposite. With the shit pay/hours most women (hell, men too) make though, is it really any surprise they would choose a life of relative leisure at home than add some shitty pay and taxes to their lives playing servant and doing the service zangyo dance just so employers don't have to pay into the health insurance for them.

It's easy to be successful riding the coattails of harder working more intelligent countries like Germany and the UK.

Re: Back in the house b*tch! (J-Wify wants it that way)

Postby Mike Oxlong » Thu Oct 03, 2013 5:49 pm

...The online commentariat went gaga a few days ago over a Nihon Keizai Shimbun report on women's attitudes toward work after marriage. The cause for the ruckus was on a giggle-and-"I told you so”" result in a government-commissioned study on the attitudes of persons under 40 years of age. Unmarried women and unmarried men in the survey sample were asked whether once they married they, if they were female, wanted to become housewives, or whether they, if they were male, wanted their future spouses to become housewives.

According to the Nikkei report, 34% of young unmarried women wanted to become full-time housewives after they married -- a seemingly irrationally high number creating headwinds for those arguing Japan's economic salvation lies in creating more opportunities for women to stay in the workforce. (Link)

The Nikkei's take on the survey was unfortunate.

First, because it misrepresented the actual answers to the questions, making it seem as though young women were their own worst enemies in terms of both marriage and economic advancement. It also created the impression of an unbridgeable gulf separating the expectations of young women and young men. **

Second, the Nikkei's report deflected attention away from the rest of the survey (Link - J) which turns out to be a treasure trove of attitude data, allowing one to burrow deep -- at least as deeply as an internet-based survey allows -- into the psyche of Japan's andafo ("under 40 years of age") generations.

For example...

:keyboardcoffee:

Zero applicants for Japan plan to promote women at work

Not one Japanese company applied for a subsidy programme aimed at promoting more women to senior jobs, an official said Monday, an embarrassing blow for Tokyo's push to boost the economy with female workers.

Hundreds of firms had been expected to apply for cash rewards in exchange for reaching targets to place women in high-ranking jobs and train female workers for senior positions.

Under the plan launched last year, successful firms would each receive up to 300,000 yen ($2,500) in compensation.

But a 120 million yen budget earmarked for 500 expected applicants went unused, said a spokeswoman for the health ministry which administered the programme.

The spokeswoman blamed the strict conditions for qualifying for the scheme, admitting it was "not a good programme".

Journalist Poe continues...............
Successful applicants were also eligible for entry into the grand national Pokki lottery, in which 2 lucky souls out of 34 million entrants win a free mini box of the popular candy snack, along with 5 VOD card points for use during their next stay at the luxury business hotel chain, Toyoko Inn, which provides a breakfast of rice, pickles and dried bonito sprinkle at no extra charge............

300,000 yen? That's an incentive? For whom? Is it just me or did they just ante up on the Penny Ante Japan theme? I really do need to write this myth buster up and sell it. For 120 yen per copy, of course. Feck me...................it's like Malaysia without all the head scarves.

Does that include the 232 yen Sunday night business hotel discount? If it's only up to 300,000 yen that is a significant savings

So...BOT: one disheartening interpretation of this would be that the potentially useful and progressive parts of Hinekure Shin-chan's much trumpeted economic development policies (and they do exist, on paper) are nothing more than a smirking wink and nod distraction to the corporate welfare sling of arrows. I just got a whiff of ole Kanemaru, smiling at the camera as he shovels public funds to his rural backroom boys.

Here he is in happier days with the Sith Yoda
Image

But it could just be that the traditional penny ante niggardliness is still so strong they actually thought such a paltry incentive would work. Which is as depressing in a different way. By my calculations it would cost a company about 30,000 or more just to run up the application.

Yeah, me too. I can't even decide which is more pernicious: the usual leeching Old Boy corruption lightly masked by a gauze of Squishy Progressive Ideas only intended as a Ninja distraction ruse, or the lurking quicksand of that much of an actual and enduring reality gap between When Things Wuz Fab and 20 years later in a totally different political economy. I've said it before but I was amazed all last summer at how far behind they've fallen and how little anybody realises it, and this stubborn penny ante mentality can't help at all. As another example, that poor dumb idol group kid that had to pay a 540,000 yen civil penalty for dating. And they went to court for that. That's $5,400.

Nope. The latter would be the worse.

You know the Kamiya Bar in Asakusa? Their large draft beer is 1 liter for 1050 yen. All summer they've been running a special where you get 1.1 liters for the same price and people in the neighborhood are excited. That reminds me the special ends this month. I better get in there to take advantage of those savings.

Soogoi Kaitoku Jan!!!!!!!!!!!!! :biggrin2: I liked the decor but it seems the sort of place you go with a few friends. We went with just 2 and it was boring, plus it closes early. A very swanky place though, to be sure. And Famous, too!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyways, that extra 100 millilitres settles it: the penny ante mentality is far more damaging than the potential corruption.

Earlier I remembered the sorts of salaries friends and such in Asakusa were quoting to me as Great Pay!!! were I to take up some sort of Real Job work in Tokyo, and it was much less than my minimum get out of bed amount. Even allowing for the Asakusa demographics
Errrrppppppppppppppppppppppp :(

Kamiya Bar is a good place to drink with friends in the afternoon since it's open and the food is better than a lot of the other tourist traps around there. I hate the first floor though. You have to buy tickets at the register to order anything. The second and third floors have normal service. The third floor is washoku though so you might not like it.

dudes dont seem to know the reality of this countrys women, especially younger generation ones.
monthly 30 man yen is not bad for suburban women whose over 50% are part-time workers under very rough labor conditions.
and then finally they would live normal neat life.
