Japan protests after 'Russian' plane enters airspace

Tokyo has lodged a protest with Moscow after a foreign aircraft -- believed to be Russian -- briefly violated its airspace, prompting Tokyo to scramble four fighter jets, government officials said Wednesday.

The foreign ministry made the protest shortly after the plane entered Japanese airspace off the coast of the northernmost main island of Hokkaido, near a disputed island chain, on Tuesday afternoon.

"We made the protest through the Russian embassy in Tokyo," a foreign ministry official told AFP.

"The Russian side did not confirm the case, only saying they will check."

The Japanese Air Self-Defense Force scrambled four jets to head off the intruder, which it believed was Russian after analysing its course, a defence ministry official said.

If confirmed, this would be the first time Russian planes have entered Japanese airspace since August 2013, when two Tu-95 Russian strategic bombers were intercepted off the southwestern Okinoshima Island, the ministry said.

Sixteen seconds after entering Japanese airspace, the plane left toward the Kuril island chain, claimed by Tokyo but controlled by Russia, the ministry added.

As a result, 'mice grannies not only began to dance, but also produced offspring'.

If the same substance were to be given to people, it could cause a significant improvement in their health, leading to the discovery of an 'elixir of life', said Dr Chernyavsky.

Russia building new military bases on islands claimed by Japan

Russia has begun building two modern military compounds on the far eastern Kuril islands, defence minister Sergei Shoigu said Tuesday, heightening long-running tensions with Japan over the disputed islands.

Russia is "actively carrying out construction of military compounds on the islands of Iturup and Kunashir", Shoigu said at a meeting with military top brass, according to the ministry's website.

Relations between Moscow and Tokyo have been strained for decades because of the status of the four southernmost islands in the Kuril chain, known as the Northern Territories in Japan.

I completely agree with this - people here should consider themselves lucky that they surrendered before Stalin invaded Hokkaido (planned for the end of August 1945). The Soviets probably would have probably done what they did in those islands, East Prussia, and eastern Poland - basically expelled the locals.

Vladimir Putin has called on European Jews to come to Russia.

"They can come to us," the Russian president told the head of the European Jewish Congress, Viatcheslav Moshe Kantor, at a meeting in Moscow, according to a Kremlin statement. "They left from the Soviet Union. Let them return."

Kantor, a Moscow native, told reporters that anti-Semitism in Europe is rising to World War II levels and that "Jews are fleeing the once-prosperous Europe."

Putin replied: "I've seen reports that (Jewish) people there are afraid of wearing a yarmulke in public. They're trying to hide their ethnicity."

I've been surprised with the antisemitism - it's not from Muslims but from white people, a lot of whom are pissed off over lack of opportunities and have fallen in with right wing groups full of hate. Not surprised that it isn't from Muslims, but the hatred coming from otherwise normal seeming people is surprising.

Lots of people seem to equate disagreement with Israel's policies (where Netanyahu probably wants to create living space for Jews) and antisemitism, but most of the time this isn't the case.

First - The antisemitism from the white crowd is not something new and in general it's nasty, it's not fun but violence is really on the fringe. The 'new' antisemitism mainly coming from Arabs and Muslims is very violence and reached a scale that made 200,000 old time French Jews for example to start actual preparations to move to Israel or the U.S.
Historically, expulsion of Jews ,actively or passively, means bleak future for the country they leave. Whatever reason suits you, it's just the way it is.
I didn't see much news cover for all the recent violent attacks on Jews in Europe and I would have changed my FB pic to 'Je suis fuck you double standards ignorant assholes' but I like my current one better.
It's funny to see all those people here justifying the illegal annexation of the northern Island by Russia because Japan was the aggressor while demanding Israel to 'return' the West Bank to the Palestinians. (Just to make it clear - I'm a pro Palestinian state but not for the reasons given by clueless westerners that want to feel good about themselves and I have no illusion that it will settle the conflict between Islam and the rest of the world).
