Kick it like Grandma

Postby wagyl » Fri Feb 12, 2016 6:17 pm

There is so much to like about this story. http://www.phuketgazette.net/phuket-new ... bill/61960

Although it relates to gaikoku, it does show the risks you can face if you, for example, choose to sneak out of the country without settling an account, like perhaps a tax obligation.

It shows repeated stupidity (or at least brazen risktaking, but are they so very different things?) by the perpetrators. Is it just me, or does 47,500 Yen for a meal for two seem a bit steep in Phuket?

And one of the detectives has a fantastic t-shirt.

“Both sides have made it clear that they would rather negotiate rather than go to court. So a representative from the resort will come to the police station soon, as we only have the right to keep the suspects in custody for 48 hours,” case officer Capt Yingyong Chuoykij of the Patong Police confirmed -

Longer than that and you run the risk of the detainees saying anything just to make it end...

And the article does mention where they're from. Do they still use lead in their water pipes?

Not anymore? The same resort I stayed at in 1993 for $5 a night is now at least $150 per night.

You can still do Thailand on the (relatively) cheap but you can't do luxury on the cheap there anymore.

Yeah, I get this is just a redux of previous discussions. The beachfront places I stayed were very basic, but clean and comfy and cheap. My complaint is that from my interwebz searches it seems you can't stay in any of those formerly basic and cheap places for less than Vancouver prices, and that Thailand on the Cheap option sounds like the parts of Thailand I have no interest in (culture, partying, etc.). $5 a night to $250 a night even over 20 years is quite a hike, after all, and the Baht still sucks, doesn't it? All I want is a proper bed and shower, a halfway clean beach and nice water and not much else. Good cheap food is always easy enough to find, as you have noted. I assume it's gotten so much more expensive due to the advent of Club Med style 6 nights/7 days drunken Brits on a luxury splurge. So Vietnam it is.

Development sucks. How dare the Thai's try to flirt with becoming an almost first world nation like Taiwan or South Korea. Thankfully a couple of economic crises and political instability have slowed their progress.

You can only do Thailand on the cheap now if you travel like a backpacker and stay in hostels. Something I didn't even like doing when I was in my early 20's. I've always wanted my own room with a private bathroom. Also, drinking imported booze is always expensive in even the shittiest of third world shitholes and if anything might cost you more than drinking the same in Canada.

$30ish a night in Bangkok was pretty reasonable. $120ish at a 5 star hotel isn't bad either...but once again, Bangkok.

I think BKK is still reasonable and even in the late 90's when I was there a clean private room with working AC and a bathroom at a no brand name hotel was $12 - $15 a night. From what I've heard it's the beach resorts that have really gotten pricey. The nice beach bungalows that used to be under twenty bucks are now going for a whole lot more.

Yeah, I figured that was the case, which is why I made a point of saying it was in Bangkok. How bad has Vietnam gotten then?

I've only been going to Vietnam since 2012 so I'm not sure. It's become the place to go in recent years though. There are so many travel and food shows in the US that go on about how amazing it is so I'm sure things will start to get expensive. Their infrastructure and ability in the hospitality industry is still fucked though so that might slow things down.
