Disney sorry for 'inappropriate' tweet on Nagasaki anniversary

The company's Japanese unit, referencing the animated film "Alice in Wonderland", took to social media on Sunday with a message about the movie's well-known "unbirthdays".

The original English tweet wished followers a "very merry unbirthday".

In Disney's original film, characters celebrate an "unbirthday" -- every day of the year except their own birthday -- during a party with Alice.

However, the Japanese tweet's wording translated as "a day of nothing" -- and coincided with commemorations for the more than 74,000 people killed when the US dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki.

Disney quickly deleted the tweet on Sunday, following a string of online criticism.

"We deeply apologise for using an inappropriate expression that could annoy people," it tweeted on Sunday.

I just learned this interesting fact about just how bad the invasion of Japan was expected to be.

The Purple Heart is a United States military decoration awarded in the name of the President to those wounded or killed while serving, on or after April 5, 1917, with the U.S. military.

The "History" section of the November 2009 edition of National Geographic estimated the number of purple hearts given. Above the estimates, the text reads, "Any tally of Purple Hearts is an estimate. If the firebombing that was done was any indication of another option, it might not have been as bad as all that. The Tokyo raid alone was estimated at anywhere up to 200,000 deaths and it cut the manufacturing output in half. (Also famous for being " the single most destructive bombing raid in history.") Without the whole Russian threat looming and urgency to bring Japan to it's knees in a speedy manner, the allies could have probably just firebombed all the major cities, industry, and farming and greatly weaken resistance before invading. (with far less US soldiers at risk)

Given what they did in the Pacific and in Okinawa the Japanese would have likely turned the whole archipelago into a big booby trap and sacrificed thousands upon thousands of civilians to bleed the Allies dry of their iron resolve, which they sadly thought they could still do. If we were to put it in current terms, it would have easily been The Worst Thing Ever (OMG!!! lol).

I still think it would have been cuddlier to evaporate Sakurajima or some such as a first example, but I get there were constraints, and Uncle Joe was drooling over Hokkaido.
