Even now, I am all too familiar with the privilege, opportunity, and power that this English provides me. Writing these words, thinking about language, in English, pains me, especially because I’m not sure if I could write this as accurately and concisely in Japanese. But I think I’ve come to terms that I will never really be “fluent enough”; I will constantly feel frustrated, one way or another. But what both languages have given me is more words to be myself, and so, while this is not a conclusion of any sorts (and in an attempt to provide a meaningful conclusion to this post) I know that I will always struggle with language and identity.

And that, right there, is empowerment. It makes you swell with pride, just to be there to witness it.

It will be interesting to see how well such power transfers to workplace skills.

Especially in a Japanese workplace.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

They'd probably assume feminist studies means she studied how to properly serve tea to male customers and proper conservative clothes and makeup for the seasons.

That entire thing is rich, especially coming from a Japanese person. I'm sure the second she gets back, she'll be protesting for minority rights in Japan, right?

I once went to a lecture by those Kyoto food people - they are basically all professional chefs and care far more about the ingredients, so using Japanese ingredients in French food (to create something new) counts as Japanese food to them.

I saw some Thai people in kimono yesterday afternoon in Asakusa. The cultural appropriation really made me feel sick to my stomach.

 Western woman picked to lead cherry blossom festival featuring Edo Period costumes
The Japan Times | March 9, 2016
...
A 27-year-old Norwegian national has become the first Western female ever to be chosen to play a leading role at a cherry blossom festival in the city of Tsubame, Niigata Prefecture, which features women dressed as high-class Edo Period (1603-1868) courtesans.
Anette Hansen, who lives in Tokyo, was picked by organizers of the Bunsui Sakura Matsuri Oiran Dochu festival to play the role of one of three oiran

To be fair to humanity he is a Wigger (he said Yo more than once). She, OTOH, is a stupid cunt. He should charge her with assault just to press the point home, though a proper ass kicking is probably the only thing that would help.

Are the Young Guidos actually popular? I find them unwatchable.

For the guy... I'm not sure it's dreads... on purpose ... or because of lack of shampoo... (aka... hobo dreads)

Aha! She did strike me as rather chirpy and smiley for somebody supposedly offended. Then again, that isn't abnormal for the grossly entitled pedantic class. It's the New Earnest Church Lady pose. They're there to help and educate. After watching it I just went ahead and assumed she was a presumptuous middling class cunt, but you might be onto something there.

PS Now that you have planted the seed it does look staged.

Actually, that thought did occur to me. Especially in the beginning the guy is unconvincing as hell.

But then again, it's nice to trigger Coligny...

Not sure if the video is fake but it's spawned a wave of angsty "cultural appropriation" videos and rants across the web. I can't wait to go back to LA this weekend...I should totally get my troll on and pack a Yukata for some hanami under the sakura at the local park with the cameras rolling. Plenty of Chinese Americans in the neighborhood to come out and tell me I'm appropriating "their culture"

There's a word for Them anyways (starts with C, ends with S), but so you know, the blossoms went 2 weeks ago up here. Weird winter, man. As in a winter that wasn't winter.

But there must be a JapinLA.com Hanami update, so check there.

Cunts?

I'm too lazy to actually go that far but all this scolding and lecturing about what is appropriation or not reminds me of all those Koreans invented everything nationalistic feelgood vids. Even funnier when the "WE have the cultural monopoly on that!" talk is coming from idiots whose culture is practically built on "cultural appropriation." (though they call it "borrowing" when they do it)

Chunkts❓

I support reasonable discussion about cultural appropriation, mostly in the hope that white people with those heritage given names (Taylor, Wilson, Hayden etc.) will stop saying Namaste to me, but it really is getting a bit silly.

I understand the emotional response when some company, celeb, etc. ignorantly misuses some sort of specific cultural element...but most of the shit I see being referenced are basically cases of racist "emotards" (don't want to appropriate kuro's language without giving credit) trying to claim some sort of cultural monopoly on "cultural elements" that are hardly unique to any single culture and people basically saying only white people are capable of cultural appropriation. Attacking random people without any context is also a recipe for a good judgment....can't wait til some white kid gets his ass beat to death for having cornrows because his best friend's mother didn't tell him he can't have the same hairstyle as her son because he's not the right color.
