Well, given that the completion rate in most advanced countries is only 60%-ish there would be as many reasons as the remaining 40%-ish. People I know that gave up and now must live with the constant BS of claiming something they aren't seen to have came down to a combination of time, money and energy. I also know 2 or 3 full Postgraduate Monbusho recipients that gave up only 6 months from plausible full completion because they felt Personally Fulfilled (!! :puke:) and had no issue wth claiming to have finished as ABD (but they were all ex-JETs)

What Russell wrote there certainly applies to a candidate's academic ability, but that is not the only reason people drop out. As for completing the coursework, getting this Japanese ABD thing and then quitting without writing or defending your PhD thesis fully what Dimwit said must figure in to more than a few, but there are also the problems of time, money and energy. Even a promising scholar that hits the time limit is seriously constrained by regulations from keeping at it, and the alarming lack of funding for almost any Jpn postgrads outside the hard sciences means a lot of people live in grinding poverty for 6 or 7 years and just run out of gas. As a comparison, I was better paid to do a PhD than I had been running a tour guide company. I had a generous monthly stipend and expenses and access to a bounty of special subsidies for which I applied assiduously.

All of which is fine and hardly abnormal in a comparative view, my own funding included. My only complaint is the acceptance of this ABD thingy as a final qualification of sorts. An ABD means a student is now in the final stage of completing their thesis and proceeding to its defence, and is largely a NAmerican and Jpn term. Using it as a terminal qualification is a misrepresentation of what it means, in MYHOMO. I know and have met these terminal ABDs that seem quite comfortable assuming a commensurate qualification with a full PhD. A full PhD that thinks that should be ashamed of themselves. BUT, if all they have done is claim a Jpn ABD they are guilty of douchey BS, not outright fraud or even misrepresentation. As Take pointed out, the Jpn ABD claim is as common as bags of Calbee Usu-Shio at a backyard BBQ. And to be as fair as possible, they do like their micro-qualifications, as we all know. My ex had a 6th Level licence in filing. Filing as in filing files in filing cabinets, Dimmy. Filing.

What interests me is why people seem so excited about this. I get it with the Big Schnozzed TV commentator because he was lying. At this point it doesn't seem these guys are.

well, it seems like as for english version career they adopt the strict version of 単位取得退学.
and the younger generations of j-reserchers adopt the strict version both in japanese and english version by default.

Lower, actually.

The local supposed top university, University of Tokyo, is only ranked 43rd globally* and dropping, just below rapidly up and coming Peking University. That is what inbred insularity in the international world of academia gets one.

just look at carefully where your proud excellent netherlands is ranked.
ironically those novel achievements were produced mainly by those "fake" generations of j-scholars.
it does show how your piled personal grudges towards japan and japanese easily distort your judgement and generate typical fallacies inside your brain. there is a "hypothesis" ready beforehand about a specific category at first and you consciously or unconsciously pick out only the elements fitting to the "hypothesis" and omit the other elements unfitting to it and then enforce "hypothesis" and the procedure is repeated again and again. its a typical example of 坊主憎けりゃ袈裟まで憎い. :keyboardcoffee:

More non sequitir red herrings, but a fine summary of contemporary Japanese research logic and method at the end there. I was astounded that confirmation bias is widely regarded as a viable and legitimate research tool. Then again, this was around the time I realised that denial is a bigger river in Japan than it is in Egypt. Very forthright of you, Takechan. :claps:

At any rate, almost right again: there is absaf'inlootly no way qualification fraud is worse in Japan than any other advanced country. Even allowing for the seemingly endless and pointless micro-divisions within the plethora of Japanese qualifications they usually are what they say they are. And that seems to include these 2 numbnutters.

So, anyways, Wuchan and others excited by this: why? Just curious, btw. It's an interesting and revealing discussion. My recurring attacks of Havillitis aside, of course  :bows:

It's the single big weakness which has catastrophic consequences from time to time. And it spawns a peculiar and debilitating form of complacency and lacquered arrogance. Tacky is a past master either by birth or by adoption.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

you are committing a serious huge error. just think about how many centuries ahead holland got modenized and in addition before that could had referred to tons of the achievements of tens of thousands years by trial and error of Mediterranean people than japan.

Oh, verily. When treated as a default comfort zone it usually makes things worse. And I sincerely consider denial to be a legitimate coping mechanism whence going through hell.........in conjunction with continued movement, as per Churchill's aphorism.

What the hell are you talking about? Japan was already well on its way to becoming a modern industrialized country in 1901, and it's not exactly like Holland was a shining marvel of advanced technological development at the end of the 19th century. Besides, it's not like Japan was forced to develop in complete isolation either... the 5000 years of Chinese and Korean history has had to rub off somewhere.

I don't know where you guys find the energy to respond to that level of Uma Poop. The man is a babbling fountain of non sequitir emospasmodic hysteria.

Not to mention that a good portion of the Nobels awarded Japan are said to be due to political armtwisting and backcroom crybaby tantrums.

the mental tradition of seniorism and conventionalism based on confucianism cannot be easily removed, which significantly inhibit innovation as fuck.
nevertheless japan got not bad results in its own way. it should be valued.

Most probably wouldn't feel any urge to point out "Japan Fail" if we weren't so often bombarded by the locals with misplaced "We Japanese sense of pride/uniqueness/superiority/etc." Yes yes Mr. Akaketsu, I know the Japanese invented the walkman and made bukkake popular but if you want us to think of you as an individual, you need to stop attributing everything about yourself to being Japanese.

You are suggesting they want to be regarded as individuals there, and that they regard you as one, which suggests another big Egyptian river of your own

Oh, just remembered: my degree(s) are often considered to be worth less than Japanese degrees because, well, they aren't Japanese degrees, and I have been told several times quite rudely not to refer to myself as Hakase because I am not, I am only Doctor (I think that last one might be more about distinction and propriety, though). Far from universal but common enough it has caused me a few dismissive grins, like when watching a caged monkey smear poo on itself to spite the people gaping at it.

you westerners learned how to reason through ancient greece and the technique of reasoning spread over the whole societies after many centuries. have you fucking westerners ever thought what extent of advantage it is? eh?
in east asia, there was not such a mental tradition of reasoning as in western world. most of japanese still dont know how to reason properly. it needs several centuries to spread and established over the whole society as did westerns. also both chinese and korean are further less reasonable than japanese (chinese are good at their own style of rhetoric(it means bullshitting  ) and korean just bark loudly).

and its an unresolved homework for japan why japan havent slipped out of copying.
so-called kaizen is most sophisticated version of copy or imitation. but copy is copy.
my guess is that the reason is a lack of something equivalent to judaism/christianity.

as for the latter issue, how can japan resolve it???

You underestimate Japan

Corn Soup in a can in a vending machine on a station platform in winter.
Think about it.
Western people have a very limited view of what can be sold in a vending machine.
A Japanese guy thinks "winter, cold night, train home, supper waiting, something warming but not filling to keep the wolf from the door until Mr Tanaka gets home" answer "Hot Corn Soup in a can"
Inspired, logical, and useful.

I would give a Nobel prize to the person who came up with corn soup in a can in a vending machine on a station platform in winter.

You overrate reason. Look at French rationality, possibly symbolic of Western logic in the lead-up to modernization. It got France nowhere, unless you count a calendar based on flowers and five revolutions in under 200 years with the ultimate achievement of essentially keeping the same elite in power, and any achievements were the result of mainly stealing from the English and Germans whose wealth and prosperity came from raping and pillaging mostly darkies or going unbermensche on the neighbors (Japan essentially went Teutonic internally, raping and pillaging the cuntryside <metaphorically> to build up mainly Tokyo and Keihanshin.)
Reason is essentially worthless if it doesn't lead to tangible results. (That's why French law is still so largely based on Napoleonic codes as he was the only Frenchie to have ever acted on his rational thought, and he was extremely successful for a little while, but the rational French thinkers are still waffling away to this day.)

I'm not surprised you're Confuced. Your ingrained Japanese persecution complex probably prevents you from realizing that Japan developed a fine sense of reason. Japanese 1%ers were given license to kill at will, so members of the general population reasoned, quite rightly, that they had better do what they were told or their heads would be soaring skyward in an instant. That's Japanese rationality: the elite get whatever the fuck they want, kirisute gomen, and the chattel conform or get their heads hacked off. Very rational and reasoned, I think. The same savage mentality exists today, perhaps a little subtler with the blood, but resulting in something like the Abe Cabinet.

Like so many Westerners who believe they'll find serenity in the mystical and exotic Eastern religions, you're typical of the starry-eyed views many Japanese have of the Judeo-Christian mentality. The "good" Abrahamic cults prey on the feeble-minded and indoctrinate them with guilt, something Japan has a track record of going to extraordinary lengths to refuse acknowledging, so Japan's answer lying in Western religions is extremely doubtful, particularly as Japan's track record for rigorous honesty, especially with itself, is pretty poor. Japanese cults prey on the feeble-minded through shame, but that only counts in Japan, tabi no haji wa kaki sute and all that jazz, but I digress...

On a different note, I am in awe of many of the achievements of the Japanese and not surprised it has many Nobel laureates. One interesting laureate though is Eisaku Sato, the current prime minister's grand-uncle whose prize was quite likely purchased. Every time a Japanese wins a Nobel Prize and the cuntry goes into a state of orgasm, the mass media rolls out its honor list to remind the Japanese of waga kuni's munificent Nobel laureates, but Sato, winner of the best-known of the prizes, is conspicuous in his absence. It always fascinated me that the cuntry's self-absorption never extended to Sato's prize. I often discussed this with ojisan in decision-making positions and most were generally of the opinion that he was an undeserving recipient, the implication behind their words being that Japan had paid for the prize. I remember asking directly if that had been the case, but nobody would state so equivocally, though nearly everyone believes it is shifty. I guess my point is that it's hard to give a great deal of credence to an organization that has awarded prizes to innumerable obscure Scandaknavians and peace laureates of the likes of Henry Kissinger, Yassir Arafat, Anwar Sadat, David Trimble and Heather fucken Mills.

Some of the recipients have actually done good things (the only recent one who comes to mind is Muhhamad Yunus).

I always enjoy reading about whoever wins the Economics Prize, especially when it's not somebody too boring.
