Had a friend visiting a few years back. He speaks no Japanese and no English, not even French; German only And he surprised me by almost effortlessly traveling to several places in Japan all on his own, getting food, booze and shelter without ever needing the keitai that we lent him to call me just in case.

I happened to be in the newsroom of a Japanese TV station earlier this week and as I was leaving saw similar footage on one of the TV screens. I asked one of the two female staffers watching intently "is that Japan?" and she answered "no, South Korea..." to which I replied "oh, good!" and then continued on my way as both heads turned to swivel at me.
