I know that for all you permanent residents this doesn't matter, but for single f-gaijin like Matsuki or a handicapped gaijin like me are forced to go to Immigration every 3-or-5 years for renewal this a huge convenience.

On that shortening of time before applying for permanent residence: they are still looking for superhumans. To be eligible to apply after one year, you need 80 points: for example under 34 (10 points), earning 6 million Yen a year (20 points), with a PhD (20 points), three years employment history (5 points), have a patent (15 points) and graduated from a top ranking university (10 points). Currently you need 70 points to get the 5 year fasttrack anyway. source hat tip
