Well I think, the main goal of the stunt has been achieved. Most every media in the world is blasting about Erdogan's referendum. Publicity galore. So it's all good.

Not so fast... the PVV is still the second-largest party in the country, and in many large cities ended up at no.1. And the local branch of the AKP also won 3 seats.

People won’t stop staring at their phones, so a Dutch town put traffic lights on the ground
As anyone who lives in a city knows, public sidewalks these days are a free-for-all of pedestrians staggering along, zombie-like, staring intently at the screens of their phones. As well as infuriating other pedestrians, there’s some evidence that this behavior increases our chances of being hit by a car.

To avoid that fate for its smartphone-addicted residents, a Dutch town is trying out a pilot program to put traffic lights where everyone is already looking. On the pavement.

Bodegraven, a town in the Netherlands, has installed LED light strips on the sidewalk that synchronize with traffic signals and turn red or green at pedestrian crossings, so that people can’t miss them even if their eyes are cast down toward their smartphone screens. The lights were built by HIG Traffic Systems, a company that is based in the town, and so far have been installed at a single intersection for a pilot project, but the company hopes to spread the idea to other towns and cities if the trial is successful.

“The attraction of social media, games, WhatsApp and music is great and at the expense of attention to traffic,” said Kees Oskam, a local councilor. “As a government, we probably can not easily reverse this trend, but we want to anticipate it in there.”

For me, driving when visiting the US is a bit of a problem since getting used to driving in Japan. Some places have traffic signals only on the right side of the intersection over by the sidewalk, instead of up high in the middle of the lane of travel like in Japan. I think Hawaii was the last place I noticed that. Very easy to miss if you are used to looking up and forward. That sort of LED strip on the roadway would really make it crystal clear even if you were unfamiliar with the location and local system.

Must be a Hawaii thing. Is this what you mean?

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/LQFgbOhKFtY/maxresdefault.jpg

I have the exact opposite experience. In the US (California/Nevada/Arizona) the signals tend to be straight ahead, opposite side of the intersection, often with multiple signals that are high enough to be visible to everyone. Like this: http://www.aaroads.com/california/image ... 184_01.jpg

In Japan, faaaar too often do I come across intersections that have low signals on the same side of the intersection as you're supposed to stop, that are impossible to see if you're the first vehicle stopped at the line.

Drowning was part of the "died".

But maybe I should restate my remark.

FAO Russell...Happy birthday!
Russell-kunj.jpg

Mainichi Newspaper | February 26, 2018
"Russell-kun" the mascot of Honan Railway, Aomori Prefecture celebrated his 7th birthday on February 26th. The Hirosaki Business High School in Hirosaki City held a birthday party for him, and the students from the school's apparel design department gave him a custom-made school uniform.
Russell-kun is modeled after the Russell "K 100" train of the Honan Railway, which was manufactured in 1937.

And while I have your attention, Russell, experience in East Pretoria has exposed me to Now Now. I understand that this is a calque from an Afrikaans expression. Is there the same structure in Dutch?

Mike, that is an interesting piece of Dutch history that I did not learn about in school. LOL

The only thing I can say in favor of the guy is that he apparently loved elephants.

No, the Dutch word for "now" ("nu") is used in the same way as its English equivalent. I am not aware of any dialect in the Netherlands that is different, so I guess the expressions in Afrikaans are local adaptations.

Dutch man, 69, starts legal fight to identify as 20 years younger
Motivational speaker Emile Ratelband compares bid to alter age to gender change
A 69-year-old Dutch “positivity guru” who says he does not feel his age has started a battle to make himself legally 20 years younger on the grounds that he is being discriminated against on a dating app.

Emile Ratelband told a court in Arnhem in the Netherlands that he did not feel “comfortable” with his date of birth, and compared his wish to alter it to people who identified as transgender.

Ratelband said that due to having an official age that did not reflect his emotional state he was struggling to find both work and love. He has asked for his date of birth to be changed from 11 March 1949 to 11 March 1969.

“When I’m 69, I am limited. If I’m 49, then I can buy a new house, drive a different car,” he said. “I can take up more work. When I’m on Tinder and it says I’m 69, I don’t get an answer. When I’m 49, with the face I have, I will be in a luxurious position.”

Doctors had told him his body was that of a 45-year-old man, Ratelband argued. He described himself as a “young god”...

I heard the news, but I didn't know it was Emile Ratelband. That explains a lot. He is a well-known attention whore, alias idiot.

I have an even more radical proposal: the court should allow him to change his date of birth 70 years ahead, i.e., to 11 March 2019. That would make it legal under Dutch law to abort him...
