Leaving Japan for a bit but keeping the working visa

Postby akatsuka » Sun Oct 01, 2017 10:37 pm

I am leaving japan for a few months to look after a relative back home. I am quitting my job but intend to come back to Japan. Will my working visa be affected if I buy a one way ticket out of Japan, it is it better to get a return ticket?

(Especially ironic question in the light of this poster's previous history of still having a working visa after he thought that both he and his former employer had arranged for it to be cancelled viewtopic.php?f=46&t=31111)

Your working visa can be affected regardless of one way tickets, mate. You obviously never caught up to the new immi regs that were put into law around 2012 - if you cease doing the activity which you were given a visa for, immi can cancel your visa. Lovely, eh?

Not saying they will but they can. They can also shaft you if you don't tell em that you've quit your employer and by inform, that means officially telling immi about the change in your circumstances.

As for the one way ticket I'd say nah - if you hand in your gaijin card to them as opposed to getting it back from them after you show them at the airport on the way out, then yeah, they will assume you no longer want a residence in Japan. You also have to just check the box saying you are returning within a year on the departure card. At least immi made that easy but if you need glasses/contacts, and don't have them, make sure you check the right box. I heard of a poor sap who checked no to the question asking if he was returning within a year and he also let immi keep his card. Only remembered it once the plane was in lift off.

But he was Canadian and from Winnipeg. All the blokes I've met from Winnipeg, esp Manitoba, have 'issues'. Must be something in the water there or maybe the fact that they didn't look so different from each other had something to do with it.
