Customs Duty on smartphones bought online?

:?: Has anyone bought a smartphone from an online vendor in another country and had to pay a customs duty or tax?

Bought my current keitai in May 2017 from dx.com. Nothing bad happened, it just arrived in the mail with no issues or further fees.

Likewise. Bought one from China a couple of years ago and didn't have to pay anything.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
