Are there any animals left that don't have their own magical disease making them unfit to eat?

The only "meats" our cafeteria cook is willing to work with now are fish, octopus and clams. You know how old that crap gets in a hurry? Especially when I don't eat the octopus (it's like chewing on a fish-flavored eraser) and the Korea way of cooking fish leaves much to be desired - no de-boning, leave the skin on and guts in, and if you've got time, maybe cut the head off, but not always.

Rice and kimchee do not make for a filling meal.

Wait, it get's worse...
Vietnam checking possible bird flu link to humans
Reuters AlertNet, UK - 13 Jan HANOI - Scientists are trying to identify a possible link between an influenza in Vietnam that killed 11 people and a flu that wiped out nearly one million chickens, officials and the World Health Organisation said on Tuesday.
Transmission of bird flu to humans is rare but the deaths come during growing fears of a new outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome after China confirmed one case of the disease and two suspected cases.

So your cafeteria skips the "magical disease" carrying meats in favor of the dioxin and mercury poisoned ones. That makes a lot of sense.

If you really want to be safe don't eat meat. OUCH. 8O

I don't eat the octopus (it's like chewing on a fish-flavored eraser)

LOL   That's a good one. Hope you don't mind if I barrow it.

Japanese bird flu

Postby Shinigami » Mon Jan 26, 2004 11:32 pm

Yeah the bird flu is in japan but the bird flu in japan is "Japanese" bird flu.

It's the better bird flu, of much "higher japanese quality"

The bird flu's from China and the like are of a much lower quality because they were not made in japan.

Or you could say that this bird flu thing just goes to show you that "all evil in japan comes from the outside."

"Damn dirty gaijin birds"

Chicks buried alive!

POWER TO OUR POULTRY!
Image . British NGO slams Asia's 'inhumane' chicken slaughterKyodo /Tuesday February 17, 3:43 AM
....The WSPA also criticized the way Japan slaughtered 30,000 birds in Yamaguchi Prefecture last December...the method of killing in Japan -- where chickens were put in plastic bags and had a gas pumped in to kill them -- was probably not 100% effective.
The bags were not very well sealed and some of the gas could have escaped, she said, adding that the authorities only pumped the gas into the bags for around a minute which may not have been long enough to kill the bird.
"This probably made them unconscious for a short time, before they were buried alive. No one checked whether they were dead when they were buried," she said.

Guidance about Avian Influenza for Americans Living Abroad
--------------------------------------------------------
The American Embassy in Beijing recently provided this information for Americans in China.

Since December 2003, outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza - mostly influenza A (H5N1) - among chickens and ducks have been reported in several countries in Asia. Human cases also have been reported. No evidence for sustained person-to-person transmission of influenza A (H5N1) has been identified]http://www.cdc.gov/flu/avian/index.htm[/url]) and Traveler's Health website (http://www.cdc.gov/travel) as further information becomes available. Information also is available on the WHO website (http://www.who.int/en/).

--Background-------------------

Avian influenza viruses usually do not infect humans. The ability of avian viruses to spread from person to person appears limited. Rare person-to-person infection was noted in the influenza A (H5N1) outbreak in Hong Kong in 1997 and in the Netherlands in 2003, but these secondary cases did not result in sustained chains of transmission or community wide outbreaks. These previous experiences with avian influenza viruses suggest that limited person-to-person transmission of the current H5N1 viruses could occur.

Infected birds shed virus in saliva, nasal secretions and feces. Avian influenza viruses spread among susceptible birds when they have contact with contaminated nasal, respiratory, and fecal material from infected birds; however, fecal-to-oral transmission is the most common mode of spread.

All influenza viruses can change, and therefore it is possible that an avian influenza virus could change so that it could infect humans and spread easily from person to person. Because these viruses do not commonly infect humans, there is little or no immune protection against them in the human population.

--Recommendations for Americans Living Abroad-------------------

The following recommendations are directed to Americans living abroad in areas where avian influenza cases have been reported. These recommendations are based on experience to date and may be revised as more information becomes available.

As with other infectious illnesses, one of the most important and appropriate preventive practices is careful and frequent hand washing. Cleaning your hands often using either soap and water or waterless, alcohol-based hand rubs removes potentially infectious materials from your skin and helps prevent disease transmission.

To minimize the possibility of infection, observe precautions to safeguard your health. This includes avoiding settings where avian influenza is most likely to be transmitted, such as bird markets and poultry yards.

Influenza viruses are destroyed by adequate heating; therefore, as a precaution, all foods from poultry, including eggs, should be thoroughly cooked.

CDC does not recommend the routine use of masks or other personal protective equipment while in public areas.

Asada poultry; double suicide

Postby gkanai » Mon Mar 08, 2004 1:09 pm

I think the news is just breaking but I am hearing that the family who runs the poultry farm where the chicken influenza was found, Asada something-or-other, the husband/wife owners just committed suicide.

Running away from their responsibilities. I find that reprehensible. Their family, their kids, will have to deal with this now that they are gone.
